This is exactly what the protagonist August does in the novel. It is a journey of self glorification for Upmanyu Dada. This kind of stuff may work in the UK or even in India if there is a lot of hype attached. That is why the novel has worked a bit here.
It is a relief that finally he finds a social worker whom he can like a bit. Thank god I never bought the book because it would have burnt half a litre of my blood when I realized what a waste of money this is.
The thing is that some of these Indian writers who have a leg in India and the longer one in UK write something according to some set rules of success and we st* d indians having no thinking of our own just go down the library to pick up the book and read it like the holy text.
Wonder when we are going to improve.
A word about R.K Narayan here, may his soul rest in peace. All his stories were touristy and written for a british audience and even when I was in class IX and the stories were in curriculum I used to wonder what the hell is in these stories.
Now we have authors like DADA who are taking that trend to new heights!
