The Unlikely Tale Of A Bear And Mouse Friendship

In an imaginary world where mice live underground and bears above, a misfit mouse is thrown into a relationship with a grumpy and antisocial bear. Just like in a love story, they face all sorts of hurdles as their peoples are anti each other.

The animation and music are excellent as is the enchanting storyline.

A must see for all ages, this film is suitable for children of all ages and is totally acceptable to grownups of all ages also. Plunging you into the marvellous picture book world of Belgian author and illustrator Gabrielle Vincent’s imagination, it is also dubbed into English with the voices of Forest Whitaker, Lauren Bacall, Paul Giamatti, William H. Macy, and other well known figures from Hollywood. I cannot comment on that version as I saw the French original and suggest that you too should enjoy it thus, using only the help of subtitles.

It may be difficult to find in India but you can request your local Alliance Francaise to get a copy.

Celestine, the young mouse, lives in an orphanage, underground with all the other rodents.  The Gray One, the orphanage caretaker, tells the little ones scary stories about bears. Celestine is sceptical.

She loves drawing. However, all she will be allowed to do in the future is  study dentistry - it’s the only thing rodents are permitted to do. In the meantime, she has to go above ground and collect bear teeth. As with human children in some countries, bear children put their teeth under their pillows when they fall.

Once, she is almost caught and escapes to a garbage can. Next morning, Ernest finds her and tries to eat her but she gets away from this fate by telling him that she will show him a place where he can get many goodies to eat.

Alas, he is caught and arrested. Celestine, who needs his help to get her quota of teeth, frees him and they rob teeth from a dentist.

The pair are pursued by the mouse and bear police. They escape in a van to Ernest’s home. Though Ernest does not want Celestine there, they eventually bond.

The plot follows their joys and tribulations tenderly and you will cherish this film, however blase you may be!
