I saw the film last night on special show and where is what I think of it .
Performances and screenplay create maximum impact in the intense love story called Fanaa. It wont be wrong to say that Fanaa stands firm on these two pillars. From the very first shot of Kajol in Delhi fort being projected in a innovative fusion of convex and concave lenses to the last shot where Amir breathes a last breath in poland, Kunal Kohilis idea of creating a spell binding impact is clearly visible. And no! The director didnt go away anywhere to come back in form! After Hum Tum , he was just waiting for a good enough product to hit back. And he does that in a tremendous fashion !
Fanaa is luscious and lyrical. Its pronounced use of light, colour and sound lend an exquisite texture of ripened tenderness to the goings-on.Kunal Kohilis directon and specially Ravi Chandrans camerawork furnish the films framework with a unique blend of nostalgia and modernity.
Story wise Fanaa is quite simple as it is a love story .Some of the best scenes in the movie are :1) Amiir approaching Kajol with a marriage proposal. The way he rebukes her and then her friends warns her in quick succession is a brilliantly executed sequence. Chand Sifarish that comes immediately elevates the scene to a high from where the movie never looks back again.
2) Kajols confrontation with Amir after they have reached Kashmir. Her outburst is one of the best dramatic scene, 3)Initial scene between Kajol-Kiran
In fact, it is difficult to single out any sequences that are not impressive! The 2 hr. long movie can be easily treated as one single scene since the narrative never breaks for a single moment. Kunal sticks to his task and delivers much more than the expected. Camerawork is outright original from Yash chopra school of movies and inspite of the same technique used by his assistants in their products, the originality of the Kunal still stands out. Use of white colour throughout is another masterstroke that signifies the right setting for Fanaa.
It wont be wrong to say that Fanaa wouldnt have been possible without music composer Jatin Lalit. They come up with a score of their lifetime .The has a right tune for every situation and still maintains a consistent theme. Yes, the sound does tend to get loud at most of the places, but it only heightens the dramatic and tense moments.
Coming to performances. Kajol portrays her character with such conviction that for a change you dont realize it is her you are watching. Instead, her innocent looks , deep lines on her face, short sentences and yet a powerful persona clearly indicate that she is exceptional talent. Tabbu comes up with yet another bravura performance . She handles her character, especially the part in the second half with utmost maturity.Rishi Kapoor comes up with a knockout performance . Kiron Kher is rocking...
As a lover then the dreaded terrorist, Amir Khan is a revelation. Though at times he peeps out tantalisingly, he remains steadfastly in character, playing his charater with an irony that scoffs at convention.
It would be wrong to compare Fanaa with Dil SE.Yes , the lead protagonist is shown as a terrorist leader a la Dil Se, the overall subject treatment is pretty much idifferent.
All up Fanaa should do well both with the classes and masses. In overseas, business should be quite prosperous in especially in UK.
