A Joy Forever....***

I am old enough to have read most of the great comics in past years. I have also been an avid reader of comic’s books - from Disney to the Super Heroes (Superman, Phantom etc).

I suspect that most of us get old without growing up, and that inside every grown up - sometimes not very far inside, is a bratty kid who wants everything his own way. The prickly and highly original six-year-old Calvin and his sidekick Hobbes, independent minded, stuffed tiger are joy forever for me. It helps keep me human!

Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows extreamly creatively imagined adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes.

It’s so engaging - whether a ’by-the-way’ look at everyday family issues or the classroom funnies like ’the show and tell’, or even a round of time-travel in cardboard boxes, Calvin and Hobbes are always a delightful treat.

They are the greatest, most wonderful comics I’ve ever read. I find it very clever and extremely well drawn comic. They debate altruism and the nature of truth; philosophies on the tyrannical school system; water-bomb girls; transform themselves into Time Travellers, Spaceman Spiff and Stupendous Man; crash-sled down hills; invent secret codes and incomprehensible sports (Aha- the great CalvinBall game); ambush the babysitter, drive his parents to distraction and puzzle over the illogic of life.

Calvin is MY favourite anti-hero. I’ve never seen anyone else capable of demonstrating such a wide variety of expressions as Calvin. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about Calvin’s subtle but profound antics with his imaginary friend, Hobbes. And so many times, craved for a hobbes of mine. In this sometimes crazy world, Calvin and Hobbes is an incredibly bright spot, the reason for opening the funnies page each day! I and my family and friends could never tire of or get ’’to much’’ of Calvin and Hobbes...

And I thank Bill Waterson for them with all my heart. I will always treasure the books you’ve produced. God bless you.
