My all-time favourite nursery rhymes

Rough day - meetings, deadlines, work and more meetings, more deadlines and more work. What a life! In the evening, I went to meet my sister and her 1.5yr old adorable daughter.


As I entered her house, I heard a distant voice singing something that amazingly calmed me and brought a smile to my face. Trying to trace the source of this magical music, I noticed my sister’s hi-fi system playing Nursery Rhymes!


Flash back! Memories! Childhood! Days of Innocence! No tension! No work! Nostalgia! poof The mere whiff of these good memories made me smile and inspired me to write this review.


I sat down and heard the entire CD and was later trying to make a mental note of my favourite nursery rhymes. Here I enumerate a few:


1. I am a Tea-Pot


I am a tea pot,


fat and stout,


this is my handle


and this is my spout.


When the water’s boiling


hear me shout.


Pick me up and pour me out


I am visualizing my fat Maths teacher now who then too in those schooling days reminded me of a teapot :-)


2. Piggy on the Railway


Piggy on the railway


Picking up stones


Down came an engine


and broke piggy’s bones.


’Aah’ said the piggy


’That’s not fair’


’Oh’, said the engine driver


’I don’t care’.


I used to recite this with very good expressions! I made a very good ’piggy’.


3. Rock-a-bye baby


Rock-a-bye baby, in the tree top


When the wind blows, the cradle will rock


When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall


And down will come baby, cradle and all


This is my favourite-est nursery rhyme. I sing it to my niece too. Tried singing it to my brother and it still has the same effect it had years back.


4. Twinkle, twinkle, little star


Twinkle, twinkle, little star,


How I wonder what you are.


Up above the world so high,


Like a diamond in the sky.


Twinkle, twinkle, little star,


How I wonder what you are!


I think this is everyone’s favourite. Stars and diamonds in the sky...


5. Baa, baa, black sheep


Baa, baa, black sheep,


Have you any wool?


Yes sir, yes sir,


Three bags full;


One for the master,


And one for the dame,


And one for the little boy


Who lives down the lane.


This one is about a loyal black sheep. For a long time in my childhood, I used to think that may be the sheep’s name was ’Baba’. Well, you know...kids!


There are many more that I simply love but these are my top 5.


poof Back to the present. Tomorrow’s another day, another set of meetings, deadlines and loads of work. It’s 1 am, time to hit the sack and I hum these words as I sum up -


Hickory, dickory, dock,


The mouse ran up the clock.


The clock struck one,


The mouse ran down!


Hickory, dickory, dock.


Over and Out!
