This review is on Fishland Restaurant and not Fishland Status Fishland in Majestic area (near Kamath Yathri Nivas) is a restaurant that comes about as one can get to epitomize the run of the mill seafood kind we all hear so much about. There is absolutely no pretence here. If youve never eaten at Fishland, then you need to brace yourself for an assault on your senses. Abandon your hang-ups when you walk through the door, put on your crumpled hanky over your shirt and be prepared for the biggest and tastiest seafood boil you’ve ever encountered in Bangalore. Since fresh fish, and lots of it, is the essence of Fishland.
It’s a Mangalore-styled celebration of Crabs, Prawns, Kane, Bangda & the ubiquitous Sear fish. There is no point whatsoever in doing anything half-hearted at Fishland. So when you go there, order all the fish you can eat because you will never get fish cooked with such monumental undertaking, ceremony and taste. The Fish Thali and Fish fry (Rava Bangda Fry, Kane Fry, Sear Fry, Prawns & Crab Fry) is what you should order here. Ignore all others, if you do, it will be at your own peril, as I have never ordered anything other than the above combo.
The fish curry is delightfully flavoured, the crab fry is outstanding, though not easy to eat, but once you learn how to pound the hell out it and extract your proverbial pound of flesh from the shell, you’ll love it. The sear fish fry is a crowd pleaser because I see it on virtually every plate at Fishland. And then there are prawns, fresh succulent and just waiting to be gobbled up. Let us not ignore that other subjects in your Thali, the vegetable dish is outstanding, so is the Rasam and the buttermilk.
The only botch to this lovely eatery is its overcrowded location, parking is a big grind here and the décor of the restaurant is spartan. Cast aside the above as minor aberrations and visit the place and you will not regret the experience, which is one of fun and open enjoyment of food. There are few places in Bangalore that are quite as relaxed, friendly and approachable as Fishland. One thing is certain you wont get seafood this good anywhere in town.
