It’s the dialogue delivery with a perfect timing that can reform a funny statement as hilarious one. Indian cinema, Hindi cinema in general have produced many talents down the years, I am not sure if it’s getting any better. Anyway here are my choices for 5 top Bollywood Comedians
1.Mehmood
Undisputed King of Comedy for a long time in Hindi cinema certainly deserves the top spot in my list. He had a great sense of humour it reflected in each of his movies. Some of the unforgettable movies are Pyaar Kiye Jaa (The part where he is narrating a scary story to his father played by Om Prakash), Johar Mehmood in Goa, Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong, Humjoli (He spoofed Prithvi Raj, Raj and Randhir Kapoor) by playing 3 generations to perfection. He single handedly introduced the Hyderabadi culture to Hindi cinema later popularized by many people. The list is just endless.
2. Utpal Dutt
Utpal dutt had a great presence in the screen and that only added to his comedy. Although he specialized in ’’getting fooled’’ kind of roles, he was a master at it. Be it Golmaal, Naram Garam, Shaukeen, Kisise Na Kehna, Dutt Saab holds a very special second spot here.
3. Paresh Rawal
He is one of those rare talents that can be funny at the drop of a hat or be cruel with equal perfection. Paresh was introduced as a villain when he started but has come a long way in comedy with Hera Pheri, Aankhen, Aawara Paagal Deewana, Hungama and even the recent Baghban. Apart from doing movies, he is very active in doing theatre and does numerous tours in North America and other parts of the world. Its only befitting that he is married to a woman with an equal sense of humour ’’Swaroop Sampat’’ a member of one of the earliest Sitcoms from india, ’’Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi’’.
4. Asrani
Now this choice may raise some eyebrows but I feel Asrani genuinely needs to be recognized for his comic treats in Sholay, Balika Badhu, Trimurti (Old), Rafu Chakkar and others. I cannot imaging watching Asrani perform comedy and getting bored by it, he is a very physical actor relies a lot on jumping around but that’s another way of being funny that I totally respect. He had a trademark voice that can tickle anybody, the notable being ’’Khush Kudhi Nahin, Khud Kushi !!’’
5.Kader Khan
Kader khan used to be college professor, he quit that to try his luck at the glamor world and I say he succeeded big time. Just like Paresh Rawal, he started out as a bad guy in early Amitabh block busters but eventally had to give in to comedy. What makes Kader different from other people is that he writes his dialoges as well giving him a great edge. His hysteric performances can be seen in Raja Babu, Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri, Coolie No.1, Ankhen and many more.
