2004 - was it worth something?

This is a topic which I have been eyeing for some days. 2004 did have some memorable movies, even if I didn’t find the year very impressive as long as Bollywood movies are concerned.

Even with some movies which introduced new themes like Girl Friend, Madhoshi, Gayab etc failing in the box office, there were some, which could make an impact on the movie screen. Please bear with my choices even if some of them may sound a bit weird.....

5) HULCHUL

I have seen the Malyalam version of this movie so many times and liked it very much. As there is no considerable difference between these two except for the star cast, I just cannot avoid this one. Priyadarshan has just repeated what he did in ’’Godfather’’ in Malayalam just as it was in Bollywood. But the unavoidable fact is that Akshaye Khanna, Kareena Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Amrish Puri all has given some impressive performance in the movie.

The combination of comedy and action along with romance has kept the movie going. Let’s see how the next movie of Priyadarshan perform as he is going to make the Hindi version of the Malayalam movie ’’Thaalavattam’’ starring Salmaan Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

4) PHIR MILENGE

This surely is one of those bold and classic attempts, thanks to Revathy. The movie brings a new theme on HIV/AIDS. Shilpa Shetty gives her best performance in the movie, much different from all roles she did before. Here she plays the role of a hard working woman who is found to be HIV positive.

She is dismissed from the company, but she refuses to give up. With the help of a lawyer (Abhishek Bachan), she dares to fight against the discrimination. There are only a few movies released these days, giving a good and meaningful message like this movie does. Among the slow paced movies, this is one movie which will not bore you. It got some melodious songs to help in its purpose.

3) VEER-ZARA

I think that this movie had created more impact even before it was released by its beautiful songs and advertisements. The movie got three of the best, Sharukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee and they have done a wonderful job in the movie. Even if the movie gets somewhat boring in the middle, the end is very touching. Sharukh’s speech in the court may be one of the best words that can be heard from a movie. Who can have doubt about the ability of this superb actor after watching this movie?

Another great thing about the movie is that it lays emphasis on the fact that India and Pakistan are really the same. The story tells about love and sacrifice throughout the movie. Even if we will have the impression that love can end you in jail, the final destination is attained at the end of this movie. Quite an impressive movie this one was!

2) KHAKEE

This is one movie which got all the factors required of an entertainer. With solid dialogues from Amitabh Bachan, Ajay Devgan playing one perfect villian, Akshay Kumar playing the unruly cop along with Aishwarya Rai to add colour to the movie is surely expected to do a great job at the box-office. Thushar Kapoor has come up with some excellent performance unlike some of his previous movies.

The last scene was the type of end which every action movie should have - solid and amazing. The hard work and determination of a group of cops are depicted here in a well-structured form. Rajkumar Santhoshi has done a great job in direction, you will know if you have seen this movie.

1) DHOOM

As the Bollywood got in Hollywood style again, the things didn’t go the wrong way. The trio of John Abraham as the smart thief, Abhishek Bachan as the cop and Uday Chopra as the racer did makee the movie a success with those intense bike races as well as to let the bike-babe combination going, there was Rimi Sen and Esha Deol. With the ’’Dhoom dhoom’’ song from Tata Young, the movie was able to create a high impact on the big screen.

It does sound good when you hear that a good movie got some nice response. Lets hope that good action movies like this are made, but not the ridiculous ones like ’’Jaani Dushman’’ and all the nonsense that followed. Only the end of the movie was a bit disappointing.

The other two movies I considered was Swades, but as it bored me throughout, I wonder why should I include it here. As I consider another one, Yuva, I wonder what they are trying to prove with the movie. As long as Masti is concerned, I find some missing links inside.

Lakshya should have made the point more clear. Main Hoon Na was just a bit overdid, I think with some ridiculous scenes in it. Aitraaz would have been in the list, but some improvements were needed. Hum Tum? I just hate it!

Mujse Shaadi Karogi was good, but not worth to be in the list. Musafir was a well picturised movie, but considering the fact that no one likes it, I am not putting it in the list thus placing Hulchul in its spot.
