True Love's Songs

What is a love song, anyway?

Love:

(1): strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties(2): attraction based on sexual desire: affection and tenderness felt by lovers(3): affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests

Song:  a short musical composition of words and music

So, it is basically a song about the strong feelings felt by someone’s heart for someone else.  Technically, it doesn’t have to be a mushy song, declaring one’s love for their object of affection.  Therefore, I chose five songs which I felt were the best love songs.  I feel very strongly about them, as they are basically the soundtrack to my love life thus far.

Nookie-Limp Bizkit

’I can’t believe that I could be deceived.had a hidden agenda, she put my tender heart in a blender, and still I surrendered.’

What could be better than a song about learning from the mistakes of love.  Boy loved girl, girl loved boy’s homies.  Girl not only breaks boy’s heart, but rips it from his chest, cuts it up into small pieces and feeds it to her rottweilers.  Boy gets pissed off and writes an angry song, telling her to stick it up her.yeah!  sigh  C’est l’amore.

Limp Bizkit kick’s it old style(circa 1999) in this song from my high school days.  The screaming lyrics are what makes the song great, but I also loved the stylin’ efforts by the bass and electric guitar players.  Great song to unwind with after a great breakup.

Someday-Nickelback

’I’d hoped that since we’re here anyway, we could end up saying things we’ve always needed to say, so we could end up staying.’

Yet another song of girl leaving boy for a miscommunication.  He doesn’t know how to fix their relationship at this time, and he’s pretty sad that she’s leaving.  That’s what I got from this song at first, but then I watched the video and wow! The girl has read the newspaper and is crying and packing.  She drives off and he chases her until she gets hit by a huge truck and killed(don’t cry and drive!).  Her spirit comes out and joins him, because he was already dead!  Now if that isn’t romantic, I don’t know what is.

The thing I like most about the music is the electric guitar and Chad Kreuger’s voice.  It feels so full and pulls you in to imagine the pain this man is going through.

Hemorrhage-Fuel

’Don’t fall away and leave me to myself, don’t fall away and leave love bleeding in my hands again.’

An oldie but a goodie.  This guy is so in love with this girl, but she keeps on leaving and breaking his heart.  Maybe it’s that his voice sounds so desperate, it makes me want to cry.  Maybe it’s the emotional mixing of a rock band and a stringed symphony.  Whatever the reason, this is my favorite’post-break-up’ love song to cry my eyes out to.

Closer-Nine Inch Nails

’My whole existence is flawed, you help get me closer to God.’

WARNING:  Do not listen to this song if you cannot handle raw sexuality and pertaining words.  You will most definately be offended.

With a strong bass line and drum beat, Nine Inch Nails sucks you into the song, as if you were in a trance.  The words and their meanings are obvious and straight-forward.  You don’t have to waste time trying to understand what the metaphor is, because there simply is no metaphor.  The singer feels his lover is all the goodness and light that he is not, and he wants to be a part of it in a very deep way.  At the end, there is a four minute instrumental, where all the instrumental solos mesh into one, creating an atmosphere of confusion, anger and lust gasp(which as we know, are all parts of love).

I Hate Everything About You-Three Days Grace

’I hate everything about you, why do I love you?’

My favorite song in my list of top love songs.  The chorus is my favorite part, when he sings the above stated line.  This song has such raw passion, raw love!  When someone you love so much hurts you so badly, you have no choice but to love and hate.

Awesome guitar intro in this song, that continues throughout the song.  Of course, my heart skips a beat when the bass guitar plays as I think it gives a song its guts, if you will.  The lead singer has such an incredible singing/screaming voice, that you can hear the anguish.  Try singing along with it, you will also feel the anguish even if you haven’t had your heart broken lately.

Thanks to Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary for the help clarifying the definitions of’love’ and’song’.  Without you, this review wouldn’t have made sense.  Also thanks to R.T. for all the inspiration to write this list.  If my heart hadn’t been broken by you, I might have happier songs to list for love songs.
