Bollywood has just hit the bottom by releasing insipid movies like Kaante and Talash and its future does seem bleak..with a very little talented directors prevailing in the industry you will find that most of the movies being produced are inspired from hollywood..What the hell is going on??the truth is that bollywood is slowly but staedily being destroyed..but in between all these there are people who seem silver lining to the indian cinema industry..and leading the way is our very own Mani Ratnam..
Some people mature by experience and some by hardwork..but in the case of Mani he was born a director a brilliant director..for the very first movie he directed agninakshtram was a awesome movie blending family drama along with the corruption in the society beautifully..so it would be a pleasure selecting the first best movies of this great man(though not an easy job)..
ROJA:Actually the first time I heard of the movie if thought of it as a romantic movie..but then after seeing the movie there was no iota of doubt in my mind that this was the best movie I had ever watched..the topic though was senstive, Mani had the confidence to churn out this great movie..Terrorist fighting the holy war, Military trying hard not to give in to the terrorist demand and a wife determined to bring her husband back from the jaws of death..with all these Mani had produced a movie which would stay in the hearts of the viewers for years..and with all those a small time musician AR rehman made his debut in this movie and the rest is history..a great movie indeed..
BOMBAY:Set in the back drop of the communal riots in Mumbai this movie shows the harsh reality of communism that still prevails in India..A touching story of a couple whose kids get lost in the riots and they are desperatey trying to get it back..this wonderful story line, backed with amazing direction and super music this movie was yet another superhit..a controversial story is just what Mani thrives on and needs for his sustenence and not only that he comes out with a brilliant piece of work every time..and AR rehman work goes wth out saying was excellent..
NAYAKAN:This was the movie that changed Kamal hassans entire career(Manis also)..A movie about how a young boy grows up to become the don of city..a wonderful showing tracing the life of a young boy who unwillingly is lured into the dark underworld only to learn that there is no ways back now and reaches the epitome of success..the mans wife ans son are murdered and his sole reason for living is his daughter and what happens in the end is awesome..stunning dialogues along with superlative direction makes this movie a great watch..
AGNINAKSHTRAM:This movie was made when Mani was in the early stages of his career though it seemd like there was a experinece touch to it..the story is about two sons born to the same father but different mothers and how hatred is develops in them and how they go about destroying each other..however the corruption in the society that almost kills their father now forces them ubite to save their fathers life..to tell you the truth I have watched this movie for over ten and even then I dont get bored..that is what a great movie is all about..
ALAIPAYUTHEY:It was duringa a college that my friends and myself skipped the college went to see a new movie that had created waves all through Tamil nadu..when I came out I again went back to see the movie and then again..such was the movie that it kept pulling me back to watch the movie..infact when the hindi version of this movie was released I was the first one to go buy the ticket and watch the movie..the story is all about a couple who marry against all odds and find the marriage life bit too hard to cope up with..so hard that the life once which seemes like bliss is like a nightmare..Potryas the bitter truths that have to be faced after the marriage and that marriage is not all about tying the mangal sutra and staying in the same house..it is a bit more than it..a very down to the earth movie..very realistic..And soongs are great..
so there you are guyz..phew what a tough job picking out five best movies of Mani..there are indeed many nore but these are a must watch..
