Five..

Maniratnam.. in sincere appreciation of some of the best films made in India... what is most notable among all his films is the exceptional music.. and breathtaking cinematography... apart from a sincere film as a whole.. one and binding.

  1. Geethanjali.. never has any film ever made anytime in India been better than this.. its a conglomeration of the best efforts of Maniratnam, P.C.Sreeram, Illayaraja, and so many people associated with the movie.. its a love story.. its about two people who see life and love in each other and how they come to terms with destiny that is to take them apart.. death. beautiful movie..

  2. Amrutha/kannathil muthamittal.. sensitive movie .. sensitive subject.. about an adopted girl trying to find her mother who was a refugee from srilanka and who gave birth to her in India.. and how her adopted parents help her see the truth and the bitter reality of life. The film bears more importance because Manirathnam uses the backdrop of sri lanka and the violence ensuing there with the LTTE.. and thereby shows the stark contrast of brutal violence and complete innocence..

  3. Dalapathi.. the perfect film.. the near perfect cast.. the stars... the script.. there was never a film that was so completely justified. With traces of the Mahabharata.. the film hinges on friendship and loyalty. a film about moral values, duty and friends, the story of Karna reenacted...

  4. Mounaragam.. The best film to exemplify the Indian values.. how we as Indians have come to accept our traditions and how a revolting spirit comes to terms with the notions of Indian arranged marriages.

  5. Iruvar/Iddaru.. A complex film.. about the intricate and magnetic relationship that politics and films share in India.. a film about two friends one a revolutionary who later becomes the head of the state.. and the other a theater artist, who becomes an actor loved by the masses.. and poses a challenge to the other.. in terms of popularity and appeal to the common man.. A poignant film but strictly for film buffs only... it is deemed Manirathnam’s best by some but to the common man.. it didnt go down well with him.. you decide for yourself..

A honorary mention must be made of Nayakan, Anjali, and Roja.. the last I appreciate only in parts.. I personally feel he went wrong with casting.. roja should have been sridevi’s film.. she would have carried the film off much better..

but well.. no complaints... he is a genius and you can only incline your head in appreciation of the best.. I hope you will too.. with this one silent gesture.. and a whole hearted approval.
