~* Wanna swap Anarkali for Baby Doll? *~

Life moves on because the world is ever-changing. Sometimes we get lost in all the new trends of today and forget about the beauty of yesterday. Some of that beauty only the sweet sound of music could capture. But now there has come a new musical recipe, where you take that old song, put it into a big mixing pot…add some catchy beats, fast raps, attractive models in videos and lots of masaala…and you’ve got a remix! Something which will give the flavour a less rustic feel and make it taste delicious for modern parties and nightclubs!

“Duniyaa chaahe badle, aap kabhi na badal jaana

Ek achcha gaana to remix ho hi jaate hai, par phir bhi rehta hai suhaana…”

People say a lot of things about remixes. Bad things. And I totally agree with them about 2 things:

1) When they just heavily smother beats and useless raps over the actually tune so that you can not actually make out the lyrics and tunes, which are the true essence of the song!

2) What is the point of having those slutty women in the videos, at which you just take one look and say “what the hell is she wearing?!”, or more like “what the hell is she NOT wearing?!”? Sometimes the remixed song is fine, but it’s the visual stuff which ruins it. Ok, so maybe they are trying to make the music appeal to the new crowd, but surely a bunch of oversexed freaks will not appreciate good music…just the slutty women.

But this is not true about all remix songs and their vids. I think decent remixes are a great way for the people of generation next to hear some of the great tunes from generation last. Take yours truly for instance, I would have missed out on many amazing songs if it wasn’t for the remixes! But nothing can ever beat the original!

So here are my favourites(sorry if they exceed 5!)….

~

Baar Baar Dekho

Album: Jalwa III

Originally from China Town. I like this song because it has such a sunny summer party feel to it. Even the crazy background wordings and added lyrics accentuate the fun of this track! I don’t have much to say about the video: A load of naukars and naukaranis strip to glittery bare minimums and parade around the massive garden whilst their maalik is out. Its…different.

Jhumka Gira Re

Album: Jhumka Gira Re(DJ Kool)

This one is sung by Asha Bhosle. I quite like the beginning, although the transition from that to the actual track is too abrupt. Doe-eyed Riya Sen may not have hit the jackpot in movies with her petite figure and slurred Hindi-speaking abilities, but she sure scored high in this one! I think her presence adds to the video appeal. I watched the original song from Mera Saaya on the plane back to UK from India; it was an intriguing flick…

Bindiyaa Chamkegi

Album: too many…only heard Bally Sagoo version

Just the usual remix substance… The video features O Pain Patel who looks like an absolute idiot sitting there with his top off smiling away and rapping. Full marks in the physique department, not sure about the rest! At least the girl is dressed to fit into the song. Unlike the Hai Tera Ghoongta remix…I don’t understand is why the skimpily-clad girls in that song are talking about * “laaj se main mar jaau ve, jo tu utaaye mera ghoongta!”* as it is they’re not wearing much…I’m sure it won’t hurt them to take away their ghoongat as well…

Ghar Jaayegi

Album: Baby Doll – Hot Ones

I think this song has been remixed well. It starts off in the background, so it sounds like it will be sung over(a la Raghav and Jay Sean). But then it gets sung more prominently. There are included raps, but I think the classical music is what makes it so good! The original song(from Khushboo) was filmed on and choreographed by Hema Malini herself! Back then it was all saris and water pots. So to sum up the new one: Pretty “prostitute”…can’t dance…nice song…weird video.

Zara Zara

Album: not that sure…(might be Baby Doll – Fully Loaded)

Usually remixes are made of old songs. This however, is a relatively new one from the movie Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein. This is one of my favourite songs, and the remix has a jazzy contemporary sound to it. You can’t really dance to the original(slow and relaxing), but you can to this one.

Warning: while watching the video you may want to skip the first part where Miss Bubblegum is dressed in this bright pink and yellow dress. But the rest is fine. I like the black-and-white part where they’re dancing(hmmm…maybe it’s the lack of bright colour;).

Dil Kyaa Kare

Album: Instant Karma

Not the usual fast party type of remix. From Julie originally(you can work that out after listening to it!). This is a slow song, kept slow. And that’s what makes it a nice number to listen to. The tunes of the verses are kool and the lyrics are wonderful. The only English words added fit into the song well, so it doesn’t spoil it.

and lastly…

Bin Tere Sanam

Album: War of the DJs(DJ Suketu)

From Yaara Dildaara. I think this is one of the very few remix which doesn’t have raps added to it. Thats why the beauty of the song still leave you enthralled! I think the lyrics are gorgeous…*“Bin tere sanam mar mitenge hum aa meri zindagi/ aana hi pada sajana zaalim hai di ki lagi…”
