Grand and Lavish 1990's.

The 1990’s were the decade where fantasy overtook facts, computer animation & special effects dominated the movie making process. While good films continued to be etched out, production budget planners had as many as$200m to work with. The result were lavish & much grander picturisation.

I present my top 5 Hollywood films of the 1990’s.

  1. Forrest Gump(1994)

Directed By: Robert Zemeckis.

Starring: Tom Hanks.

Worldwide Gross:$677, 386, 686.

Awarded Best Picture, Best Director & Best Actor Academy Awards.

The world will never be the same once you’ve seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump, inspite of an IQ of 75, has been present at many historic moments between the 1950’s and the 1980’s. He does everything from teach Elvis how to move his hips to running the length and breadth of America.but his true love, Jenny, eludes him. Tom Hanks is the only actor who could have played such a role so convincingly.

  1. The Lion King(1994)

Directed By: Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff.

Starring(Voices): James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons.

Worldwide Gross:$783, 841, 776.

Life’s greatest adventure is finding your place in the Circle of Life. In this coming of age story, the young lion prince Simba is tricked by his uncle Scar and runs away from home. Years later, having fought the shadows of the past, he returns to his own kingdom and claims his rightful crown.

  1. Titanic(1997)

Directed By: James Cameron.

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet.

Worldwide Gross:$1, 845, 034, 188.

Awarded Best Picture & Best Director Academy Award.

Rose and Jack’s immortal love story against the background of the sinking of the Titanic. A story of a rich heiress and a third-class passenger is appealing enough, but its greater purpose is to make the effect of the tragedy more personal. One of the many all-time memorable scenes are Rose and Jack posing on the railings & Jack painting Rose in the nude. This film is the biggest ever worldwide success to date.

  1. Jurassic Park(1993)

Directed By: Steven Spielberg.

Starring: Richard Attenborough.

Worldwide Gross:$914, 691, 118.

A ride in the park with prehistoric creatures. Anyone game! Welcome to Jurassic Park. A park with DNA-cloned live dinosaurs as the main attraction. But the ride turns to disaster with the escape of the dinosaurs who begin to destroy the park. The star of the film was a computer-generated Tyrannosaurus Rex.

  1. Pretty Woman(1990)

Directed By: Garry Marshall.

Starring: Richard Gere, Julia Roberts.

Worldwide Gross:$463, 406, 268.

A modern day fairy tale that established Julia Roberts as America’s biggest pin-up girl since Marilyn Monroe. A innocent movie about a pro*titute with a heart of gold who meets the industrialist who values her for her virtuosity, won many a heart. Gere takes over companies, takes them apart and sells the pieces for more than he paid for the whole. Human feelings are not considered. Same goes for hooker Roberts who mentally detaches herself from her profession.

Some honorable mentions:

Ghost(1990)

Saving Private Ryan(1998)

Home Alone(1990)

Toy Story(1995)

Schindler’s List(1993)
