There are, of course, thousands and thousands of magazines published all around the world. Sticking with the English language press, there are numerous magazines published in the US, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Singapore and Hong Kong, just to mention some of the major publishing centres. Narrowing down to the five best magazines is a herculean task. However, I will respond to the challenge and nominate my top five.
One of my great interests is travel and my first choice for travel magazines is the US based TRAVEL AND LEISURE. This beautifully illustrated magazine, a monthly, is unashamedly geared to affluent travellers and has great feature articles on travel destinations including health spas, great hotels, restaurants and so forth.
My second choice of travel magazine is WANDERLUST, which is published in UK. This is markedly different from my first magazine-it is geared more to’exotic’ travel, the desserts of North Africa, Cruising the Nile, Scaling the Alps, is much more the’meat’ of this bimonthly publication.
My third choice of magazine is CONNECTING. Solo Travel News, which is published in Canada and edited by Diane Redfern. This is a specialized publication slanted to cater for the interests of solo travellers. A most helpful and interesting read.
Magazine No 4 is a weekly publication, THE ECONOMIST. I find this to be a superb publication on economics, politics and current affairs. The standard of writing on the Economist is incredibly high and the coverage is international in scope.
My final choice, AIR FORCES MONTHLY, reflects my interest in military aviation. This British magazine, a monthly, is a highly authoritative source of information on the world’s air forces. Most months, apart from news items, there will be technical articles and usually a survey of one of the world’s air forces. A thoroughly fascinating and very readable publication.
There you have it - my personal choice of great magazines! Hope you like them although I do not expect you to agree with all of my choices.
