Aamir Khan moved from a romantic hero of QSQT & experimental geek of Rakh to a matured actor of the movies like Lagaan, Dil Chahata hain, Sarfarosh, Gulam, Rangeela & more. He has shown amazing ratio of actual implementation to the potential. Even Amitabh in my opinion will not be able to go past this ratio of Aamirs. (Shahrukh?...again, WHO? seriously, Sharukh???) :-))
Aamir Khan belongs more to the Dilip Kumar way of acting but less suspect to the disadvantages of it due to wisdom earned by other actors work & mistakes. Every generation has to build on the work of teh previous one. The same way Amitabh & Sanjeev Kumar, Nasir, Om Puri built on Dilip Kumar & other seniors.
Honorable mention: Gulam; Dil Hain Ke manata nahi; Rakh; Andaz Apana Apana; Akele Hum Akele Tum (somewhat misfired movie but Aamir was good)
JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR
My all time great/fresh movie. I can watch it anytime & many times. I have seen consecutive shows of this movie when it was released! (Same with Agneepath). It was so different then: No villain, No falatu dialogs, no unusually sentimental stuff. It was a very honest movie that showed college/school guys as they should be & generally are in the real life. Ni Khiladi stuff here or no goody/goody cosmo stuff that Sharukhs & Kajols of this world show in Kuchh Kucch hota hain or Main Hun na! (sorry, I like to criticize such stupid movies: Lagata hain aaj phir Rahul aur Anjali ka zhagada ho gaya ARE BHAI, WHO CARES????????) :-))
Aamir Khan has got filmfare for all the wrong movies (except Lagaan). Raja Hindustani? Bullxxxx. He should have got it for Jo Jeeta, Rangeela, Sarfarosh for sure. His portrayal of Sanjay Lal is just perfect! 100% marks to his role. The pasteurization of the race is worthy of competition with the Hollywood movies. The songs couldnt have been filmed better. Woh Sikandar bhi: Nahi Samazhe hain Woh Hame; Pehala Nasha; Jawan ho yaro; Nam hain mera; Deewane hum pyra ke parawane hum pyar ke, Ruthkar hamase kabhi

RANGEELA
This was one of the early movies where it occurred to me what Aamir Khan was capable of doing. Until then Shahrukh Khan used to portray mawali character with a lots of overacting & his typical overall over-energetic way! Here this guy just walks, talks, eats, listens, dances like a mawali & that is 100% exactly the way the language is spoken on the street. I was in the engg. college then & I swear that none has performed a mawali better than Aamir Khan after Anthony from Amitabh. An off-bit comparison but the quality of Anthony & that of in Rangeela is the same. The way he says to Jackie Achha fight karata hain & also at the end the way he keeps his hand on Jackies sholder like I know what you are feeling right now eventhough you say you dont love Mily & there is nothing etc etc He conveys a lot without speaking a word, are you listening Shahrukh?? :-)

LAGAAN
A lot has been discussed & written & read about this movie & I think I cant add anything that is not yet been said of the movie. Kudos to take such a topic & to show a cricket game for almost 1.5 hrs! This requires lot of courage & daring after spending such a huge money.
SARFAROSH
One of the all time best commercial cinema with a very serious handling of the Pak angle. I highly recommend a look at this complete review on this master blaster. Copy-paste this link in the address bar: https://mouthshut.com/readreview/54727-1.html
DIL CHAHATA HAIN
Aamir proves is method acting school roots by making such a diverse set of movies. Lagaan & Dil Chahata Hain represent two completely different characters with in a short span. Here Aamir portray a rich kid from a high society. Here, surprisingly (or not) the college crowd doesnt look as cheap or artificial as Kuch Kuch or the likes. :)
His expression when he sees the girl of his dreams is something to check for yourself. Similarly he is on the way to her house & he looks at the crowd hanging at the college & he looks his own self a few years back from the car, he looks at his past & smiles (a little). It is hard to describe how effectively the director & the actor have shown the difference/change in his attitude after he has discovered love in his life & has moved on to a matured man from just out of college state of mind. I think every person who has gone through college & now settled in life would appreciate this scene a lot more. I could relate this to my life & you wont believe how this scene shows the nostalgic emotions/feelings one develops while relating to this scene! GREAT WORK!
