A few years ago when I first heard Nusrat, I smirked at the faces he made and the constipated notes he seemed to hit.and then a friend of mine(a huge fan of his) gave me his album SANGAM to listen to.and since then I have been captivated, bowled over and simply crazy about Nusrat!
And today, I find it difficult to cut down and choose only FIVE of his best songs! Anyways.here goes.
Yeh Shaam Phir Nahi Aayegi - this one has got to be one of his very best.and to think that his’shaam’ came so soon in life.! There is soul, passion and so much more! Even people who have not liked Nusrat’s songs have fallen for this one. There is rhythm, and is so soothing.
Wohi Khuda Hai - This is a song in which I feel he breaks the barriers of religion.whether you are a Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist or follow any other religion for that matter.this song is about that merciful and powerful GOD.
Shaher ke dukaandaron - There is something about this song that made me completely fall in love with it.even though I couldnt most of the words in it.! In most of his songs, I am not able to understand a whole lot of the great sounding words he sings.but then I guess it is the passion, the sheer joy or the pain that they bring out I guess.! *(Kind of like the spanish songs of Julio Iglesias that I get bowled over although I dont understand!:)
Unki Gali Me - Another of my dont-know-why-but-i-just-love-it favourites!
Mere Aankhon ko aankhon ka - .sahara kaun dega.samundar me samundar ka kinara kaun dega.Another soulful and soothing number of Nusrat.!
For those of you who have been put off by his looks or by the faces he makes(or even because he is a Pakistani! I hope there aren’t many in this narrow-minded category!).listen to the songs listed above and trust me.you will love him.!:)
