Five star cannot be rated 5 star!

Susi Ganesan was praised for his directorial skills which he displayed during the shoot of Prashanth and Sneha starrer Virumbukeren. The movie was never released but after watching his first released movie 5 star, we are sure this Mani Rathnam associate has got a bright future ahead. Like his mentor he has added some deft touches to the normal storyline to make it an interesting screenplay. Though there are some flaws in the narration, we are treated to some visual delight by the camera man Ravi Varman.

The movie is all about the friendship between 5 young people - Ilango (Krishna), Prabhu (Prasanna), Sundar (Karthick), Priya (Sandya) and Indra (Mangai). They are in their final year in engineering in Chennai and this gang is famous throughout the college. They are so close to each other that 4 of them refuse to join a concern cuz one of them is not appointed and finally all 5 get jobs in L & T and they rejoice with a song but tragedy strikes there. Ilango’s father who happens to be a village big shot rushes to Chennai and takes Ilango with him and gets him married to his cousin Easwari (Kanika).

Ilango is shattered. He returns to Chennai and departs his friends by choosing a post in another city much to the dismay of his friends, but he is confused whether to tell them about his marriage or not. Now after 6 years the girls are married and the rest of the boys in the 5 stars are searching for someone except Ilango, who has settled down in Switzerland with a foreigner. Prabhu chances to meet Kanika during a train journey and he falls for her but when he comes to know the truth about Kanika, he is shattered. Kanika meanwhile is determined to wait for her runaway husband. Now he is egged by all his mates to search for Ilango and the story lacks the pace during this part but when they find him settled in Swiss with his girl, Prabhu returns to India and after some village sentiments Kanika joins the gang but at what cost is the suspense. Go check out the movie in the big screen.

Kanika is surprise package of the movie, her character has been shaped well by Susi Ganesan but she falls short in acting, in the song sequences she is good and so are the others. Krishna and Prasanna are good so is Karthick. Sandya and Mangai are apt for their roles. Vijayan as Krishna’s father and all other cast members have done their role. Songs are nice in the screen thanks to the way of picturisation. Kudos to Ravi Varman again for the camera but Susi should have cut down one of the songs to add more raciness to the script.

APPLAUSE : All the lead stars.

AHEM! : Second half - at times it is dragging a bit.

VERDICT : Five star cannot be rated 5 star but it sure can be rated as 4 stars. Nice entertainer with debutants. No Vulgarity and item numbers. Good slick new generation movie a la Mani Rathnam style.
