Three worst Indian cricketers

My first worst player to play for India would be undoubtedly Ravi Shastri. Initially he started his career in style with his left arm spin and possesing a modest ability to bat, he promised quite a lot. His feats at the World series cup in 1985 in Australia is already a part of cricketing folklore. His decline began from there when success went to his head and he fancied himself to be a ladies man. His dalliances with Amrita Singh brought him more brickbats than boquets. His bowling was actually cannon fodder for the opposition batsmen.

The fantastic assault on Ravi Shastri ’s bowling by Viv richards in the Nehru cup in 1989 is still remembered by Indian fans. Thankfully for India he did not play long after that and retired in 1991 after the Australian tour in which he made a dour 206 in the third test in Sydney, now mainly remembered for being Shane Warne’s first test.

My second candidate for this dubious honour would be Gopal Sharma, an off spinner who played in the India - Pakistan series 1987 in India. He was an apology of a spinner and was an exceedingly poor bat to boot. In one of the test matches in that series, he managed a 4 wicket haul, 4 for 88 to be precise. He was never heard after that, thankfully.

The third and last of my vote would go to Sadanand Vishvanath, the wicketkeeper. He shot into prominence in the World series cup in 1985 in Australia which India won convincingly aided by a fantastic team effort. He was a bit of a loner and indisciplined to boot which aided his exit from the team. He is now chiefly remembered for his antics with Javed Miandad in one of the matches in that series.

I have written about players who had talent but burned it wastefully ending their careers in ignominy which they could have easily avoided. Let their careers be a lesson to all budding players
