If we cud digest and rave about stupid movies like Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, then Im sure Khalid Mohammeds FIZA deserves praise. Finally a meaningful movies after loads of bhelpuri flicks. Agreed this film has some loose ends and may appear to have more smoke than fire, but give the first time director some credit for bringing out the BEST in Jaya Bachchan, Karishma and Hritik.
Atleast he isnt like the commercial pot-bellied Ghais and Dhawans who make fools out of talented actors and send the audience home without leaving an impact on them. I loved it because I saw powerful acting and well portrayed emotions.
THE PLOT == Sukhi parivaar- Ammi (Jaya), Fiza (Karishma) and Amaan (Hritik). 1993 Hindu-Muslim riots. Amaan missing. Simple but daring Fiza in search of brother. Rebel brother found in a terrorist gang whos mission is Jihad (holy war) against violence and injustice (yawwwwwwn!) Daring Fiza brings Rebel bhaiya home. Sukhi parivaar reunited.
Bhaiyas rebellious worms are still live n kicking. Hes a misfit in his own house. Ammi commits suicide on learning that her bhola ladla can use a gun better than Rambo!Rambo...oopssss Amaan joins the terrorists again in assasinating stereo-typed politicians. Daring sister again runs around the entire city (on Liberty footwear) only to be told by Bhaiya that he wants to rest his head in Ammis lap!! End of Story..
Khalid has roped in the best names in music, lyrics, art and choreography. Im ekdum impressed with his maiden venture. Mahesh Manjrekar, Sanjay Bhansali and Vidhu Chopra (my favourites)...make place for Khalid.. Jaya Bachchan still has her bubbly screen presence and is the most adorable mom anyone would love. For once I am all praises for Karishma. Her brilliant mature performance will give Manisha and Tabu some competition. Her simple attire and plaited brown hair (Thank God no highlights and curls and lycra) gave a real appeal to her role and she carries the entire movie on her khandaani shoulders (of course sharing the burden with Hritik here and there).
The Bro-Sis casting is convincing. Hritik..ah!! kya kehna.. He is amazing and shares the accolades and praises with Lolo. I am glad he isnt one of those who prefers to be stuck in cho-chweet hero type roles. Versatility is what I (as the audience) expect from my favourite actors..(Abhishek, please take note and wake up!) The songs fit well into the movie. Even Lolos disco number (a PT drill) brought some nonsense to the sensible movie. Neha is useless.. Bikram Saluja has loads of potential and is very promising (not as main hero though!)Sushmita Sen, although a true Indian beauty is a lousy actress...Shes bollywoods latest show(silicon)piece. Give her the most spicy song in the movie and watch your audio sales go boom and the crowds whistling for more.
Mr. Khalid Mohd., you did a great job. Keep giving me films like these and learn to cut down on your spicy criticism... for ur own good :)
