FlashGet Rocks

Couple of years ago, there were very few of the download managers available. Mostly GetRight or Gozilla were being used. Well, they were fine at that time, considering the competition. But then came download accelerator (DAP) to the scene and it changed it all. With all the neat features (which now-a-days are commonly available in any download manager), it became the most popular download manager.

Even today, download accelerator has the same robustness and user friendliness as it had in the previous versions. It also has a facility known as “Always Resume”, which can resume downloading even from those sites that don’t support resuming. But this feature is not worth mentioning, simply ‘coz it’s available only to registered users (which we probably can’t afford. let’s just use the ad-supported version).

Now, let’s have a look et “FlashGet” (version 1.40). Well, it has all the regular features that any download manager (including download accelerator plus 5.x) like, multi-threading (simultaneous downloads), file management or organization, mirror-search, automatic dial, hang-up, schedule, integration with IE and Netscape (and even with Opera), and much more…

Now, let’s compare download accelerator and flashget (and let’s forget about GetRight and Gozilla as they are not even closer to DAP or FG).

-- In first look, the interface of flashget looks a bit clumsy, but it gets better as u work more with it. The “user guide” given along with flashget is very easy and simple to understand (not a feature available in all the software’s available today).

-- Both support, non registered versions which are supported by ads.

-- Has a unique feature to control speed of download. The speed can be set to “Unlimited” for utilizing the full power, “Manual” for exactly specifying the speed to be utilized (can be used to limit the speed so that remaining speed can be used by other software accessing the internet), or “Automatic” for automatically sharing the speed between itself and other software accessing internet (can be used to surf while downloading).

-- Can download files even from Freedrive.com   . This is a feature which probably no other download manager provides for.

-- Supports “Opera”. Well, this browser is a magical little piece of software. The heck with IE, Netscape, Mozilla and even other multi-window browsers using IE in background. Due to the popularity, flashget has even added the support for this browser.

-- Talking ‘bout browsers… well, flashget has its own site explorer. Use it to leech files from sites (can be used when downloading all the images from a website) and accessing and downloading from FTP sites.

-- Well, there are still so many features, this review would have to be a big article to include it al. Let you be a internet newbie, or a techie with a dial-up connection or a fiber optics line, u al can enjoy using it. So I suggest you try this download manager and I’m sure u’ll ask this to yourself, “How did I manage without it till now?”

Remember: There are reports for spyware being found in some versions of GetRight and Gozilla! You all can confirm this by using a anti-spy software like Ad-aware from Lavasoft.
