Situated right next to the Music World outlet on Park Street, Flurys to Kolkata is an institution encompassing a multitude of feelings and memories. It is, after all quite old.
First the good things.
The food. No matter what anyone might say, the food is superlative. Be it the main course, the beverages or the desserts, Flurys provides the best of what you can ask for with the kind of budget that one needs to have for an outing to Flurys.
I have had the Ceasars salad there, and it was mind blowing. Same goes for the grilled sandwiches. In the main course, I have only had the jumbo prawn thermidor. And that is GOOD. Better than anywhere else that I have had it in Kolkata.
I cannot say much about anything else, though I do wish I could. The depth of my pocket is such that I could not sample much of the food on offer.
Now, the dessert.
Firstly the ice creams. They are home made and as such have a distinct taste. Quite good, though I thought they lacked a certain something. In my opinion, there was a touch of preservatives in the ice cream though I might very well be wrong.
Secondly the pastries. the rum balls are ok. The lemon tarts are ok. There are a few egg less contraptions on sale, which disgust me though, I hope they are liked by those who are brought up on them. Last time I was there, I had the Triple Choc Torte, and believe me, if there was heaven on earth then, humi asto humi asto humi asto.
Now the not so good things. The service. The waiters are a bunch of snooty nosed individuals who look down the noses and have no opinion as to the dishes on offer in the menu - except, of course for the fair skinned blue eyed individuals. To top it all, you have to go to extraordinary lengths to grab their attention.
The prices. I know, I know, its elite and good and all that. But they charged Rs. 60 for the pastry that I had. 60 for a pastry!! All in all, do go there, but witha deep pocket.
