Ford Ikon

Another Ford? I don't think so.

Nothing against Fords, I have owned a vintage Model "A" 1930 and also an Ikon 1.3 2000, and admire the history that goes with the brand in motoring.

But over the last decade or so they seem to have lost the edge globally, and nowhere does it show up worse, than in India. Technology beneath the bonnet is pre-obsolete and the prices are not that cheap either. I wish that even their ad campaign made sense, but then they went and used Abhishek bacchan, who previously endorsed Maruti Versa everywhere and Swing in B&B.

In 2004, fed up of heavy maintenance, service and fuel costs, I let go my Ford Ikon 1.3/2000 after 4 years and achieved a second hand price which was almost the same as what I achieved for my Maruti Zen/’96.

Sure, it gave me a good time, saved my back once when a Sumo rammed into the rear at full pelt. But there were small problems. Aircon would throw heat. Brakes would jam. Taking the interior carpets out to clean the car was almost impossible. And the fuel tank would smell into the rear compartment.

Buy a Ford only if you really want one desperately. But do speak with other Ford owners in your town before you do so. Stand at a filling station or parking lot and ask random, the vehicle should be at least 2-3 years old. or ask taxi fleet operators
