After its success for 10 years the Ford Ikon got a new Heart - The 1.4 Duratorq TDCi engine. The same which is used in the Fiesta. The model has been really successful in its segment over the years and proved to be a comeback of sorts for FORD after the failure of Es*ort.
Positives:
The engine- The already peppy engine from fiesta is transplanted on to the Ikon to give it a higher heart beat and more power. Ford in general is known to make cars which its drivers enjoy to drive. The Ikon is 100 kgs lighter than the fiesta thus the engine becomes more efficient, torqy and more horses per tonne.
Mileage- The new 1.4 TDCi gives a good mileage in comparison with the cars of the same segment. It gives around 17(city) and 23(highway). This engine also holds the Limca record if you can recollect.
Interiors- The interiors are also freshened. the interiors are now in beige and look far better than the previous model. The interior is also very roomy.
Pricing- Ford has got it right in this department too by pricing the car along with the premium hatchback segment. People can now go for a sedan instead of a small car for the same price. Also you get both petrol and diesel versions in Ikon.
Ford has localised most of its parts and hence the maintanance and servicability cost also has come down. Hence, the car has a low cost of ownership leaving behind its competition.Ford is also promising a 2 yr/1 lakh km warranty for its all new josh machine.
Negatives:
Looks- The main negative in the all new Ikon is the looks. The car looks almost the same except for some minor changes in the front like the headlight and bumper. The area around the Ford logo reminds us of the Es*ort. The side and the rear of the car remains untouched and sometimes feels outdated compared to the present cars. The door handles also dont look good on the car
Transmission Vibration: The Ikon is unable to damp its vibration coming from the transmission. Also the cabin is very noisy.Personally I didnt like the noise the car doors make when they shut.
Safety: The safety of the passenger is completely ignored by Ford. They still think that Indians are satisfied with just central locking system as a safety feature. ABS, Airbags are also not even a option.
Service Centers- Ford still has a long way to go in terms of its dealers standards. It is often at the dealers end that customers start having a bitter experience with Ford. Heard that Ford is doing something about it. Also its dealer network is not widespread and deep.
Overall Ikon is a very good deal for the money you shell out. It is a perfect drivers car. Neglect the minor faults here and there, and you get a very good machine. The Josh machine is back and am sure will make people Go Fida over it.
