I had a Maytag top loader and found out that I had been using it for who know how long and the agitator wasnt working. So basically I had been washing my clothes but they werent really washing. One day I noticed something looked the same as I put it in the washer, when it came out. The machine sounded like it was working, but when I opened the lid the agitator wasnt turning. Maytags are bad these days, they used to be the best, but no more.
I only had that machine for 6 years and had to buy a new one. I bought a front load Frigidaire, the best buy according to Consumer Reports. To begin with the door wouldnt latch right. I had it repaired and it worked until I washed a bathroom rug, just a small washable bath mat. After the machine was finished washing it was dripping wet. I turned it on spin cycle again and it was still dripping wet. I called the repairman and he said the door wouldnt latch tight so the machine wouldnt spin. He replaced the same part again. The exact same thing happened again, a third time. At least it was still under warranty. It never worked right from the beginning. I discovered that it works fine, not sure about how good it cleans, unless you put something heavier in it like a bathmat.
I am returning it under the lemon law in my state, and buying a top loader but not a Maytag, probably a Whirlpool. I just dont like the door latch situation, the cost, and I always have to leave the door open because it stinks and builds up mold it you dont. Also consumer reports says it only saves $10 a year in power, that isnt much. You have to buy special HE detergent which is more expensive.
Unless you want to sit on the floor and take your laundry out of it you also have to buy a pedestal for at least $200. Makes the price a lot more.
