Sikkim - Unity in Diversity

Sikkim is probably the most beautiful hill station in India. The capital Gangtok is ultra modern with all luxuries and facilities yet is Cultural and Traditional. The people of sikkim are highly courteous and very helpful. We travelled to sikkim in the month of February where the temperatures were below freezing in certain places. Since we travelled in peak winters, i.e off season, we did not make any concrete plans on the location, duration of the stay, places to visit, even hotel booking etc. However we could manage all these very effectively with people always more than willing to help. Ofcourse we had managed to get lot of details through friends, associates and the net about travel within Sikkim, Hotel details, Places to see. There are many hotels in the city in all categories - budget as well as Luxury. The city also has couple of discotheques which actually surprised me as I thought the place was more Tradional and Cultural. One major issues is, the places to eat out are limited with not much of variety and certainly Vegetarians would have a tough time in places other than Gangtok. The city has many Monasteries depicting the traditional buddhist culture, the most important being The Rumtek Monastery (a 24 km drive from Gangtok) and The Enchey Monastery. The view of Mount Kanchenjunga, the second highest peak on the Mighty Himalayas was absolutely mind boggling and the snow bound frozen Tsangu Lake with a temperature of -5 deg C was Inconceivable. Since our trip was unplanned, we could not visit the Nathu La (Indo chinese border) which requires advance permission. Next time when we go, we will certainly take care of this. The view from the cable car moving right across the city is really worth. Helicopter rides are also available with trips around the Mount Kanchenjunga but its really expensive with an hours ride costing approx 25K INR. There is nothing that one would dislike on a visit to Sikkim and certainly we enjoyed every bit of our stay in the state.
