He only reason why I had to watch this movie is because it was shown in the luxury bus in which I was travelling. Being seated in the bus I had no escape but to watch the movie which was being shown.
The story of Garv is not new to the Hindi film genre. Police Commissioner Samar Singh ( Amrish Puri ) has the dream of creating a crime free state. He is among those who are anguished to see criminals being let off in the courts due to legal loopholes. Hence he forms a crime control squad comprising of officers such as Arjun Ranawat (Salman Khan) and Haidar Ali ( Arbaaz Khan ). The crime squad kills many members of the criminal gang whose boss is Dubai based Zafar Supari (Mukesh Rishi).
Seeing his fading influence over Mumbai crime scene, Zafar Supari manages to overturn the state government with the help of Kashi Trivedi ( Govind Namdeo ), the opposition leader who then becomes the CM. The Commissioner is transferred. The new Commissioner Deshpande ( Shivaji Satam ) is a handman of the CM and he creates hindrances in the functioning of the crime control squad.
Haidar Ali is killed and branded as an ISI agent by the police Commissioner and Salmans foster sister Raakhi is raped by the politicians and corrupt police officials. To avenge his sisters rape Arjun Ranawat kills 18 people at one go. However, in the court he does not say why he has killed 18 people because otherwise he would have to disclose the fact of rape of his sister. The end is predictable like most Hindi movies.
First about the merits of the film. Salman Khan is the saving grace of the film.He gives a decent performance as ACP Arjun Ranawat. Some of the concepts such as human rights for criminals who do not respect human rights of others are also discussed in this film.
The demerits of this film far outweigh its merits. The storyline is basically weak. Screenplay is pathetic and dialogues most ordinary. Good actors like Anupam Kher and Amrish Puri are reduced to mere caricatures due to poor quality of dialogues. Abusive language is used unnecessarily in some of the scenes. Characterisation is very weak. Overall handling of the film make you feel as if you are watching a B grade movie with A grade stars.
If you read the plot I have discussed above can you tell me where does Shilpa Shetty fit in the story ? She is shown as a bar dancer, Jannat, who loves Arjun Ranawat. She has tied a ring around her neck and waits for the day when Arjun will put the ring on her finger. Shilpa is in this film only for songs and dances. The music of the film is nothing to write home about. The songs and dances leave you irritated.
There is one scene which was intended to be serious but which left me laughing. When Haidar Ali is accused of siding with criminals by the Commissioner Deshpande, he screams YAAAAAAAAAHHHH and rips of his shirt to show bullet marks on his chest. Instead of those antics the dialogue writer could have used some meaningful lines to put the point across.
All in all Garv can be summed up as good intentions and wrong actions.
