Surely, movies can make impossible things possible! The latest flick, ?Gayab?, which has been produced by Ram Gopal Varma, is a fantasy movie. It is about a loser who gets powers and then teaches everyone a lesson, who used to make fun of that person. We have seen ?Koi Mil Gaya?, where Hrithik Roshan was a loser, but gets very powerful, when he meets an alien. The same thing we saw in ?Darna Mana Hai? [from which this movie is heavily inspired], where Aftab Shivdasani who used to be a loser, could say ?STOP!? and made everyone stop. Now, this time nor do we have an alien, neither the word ?stop!?. In this film, we have an invisible man, who can fulfill his wants by being invisible. We have seen such things in films such as ?Mr.India?, but this is still different. Daringly different! Will this experiment work at the box-office?
THE FILM:
Varma Corp./K.Sera Sera`s ?Gayab? directed by Prawaal Raman, stars Tusshar Kapoor, Antara Mali, Raman Trikha, Raghuvir Yadav, Rasika Joshi and Govind Namdeo. Whenever, there is a RGV film, we have lots of expectations and from this one also the expectations weren?t low. The film was given a lot of hype and the expecations were high. So is it only hype or does the film live up to the expectations of viewers, is the important question. Well, yes! The film succeeds to entertain, despite its flaws!
THE CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES:
1.Vishnu Prasad(Tusshar Kapoor):Vishnu Prasad, i s a complete loser. Nobody takes him seriously. Everybody laughs at him. He is 0.99% confident and 99.99% confused. Suddenly he becomes invisible and can do what no normal man can do. Tusshar Kapoor, gets a chance of lifetime through this film, and he gives a brilliant performance, surprisingly. The role of Vishnu Prasad, really suits him. This is definitely his best performance, in his three years career. The way he makes confused face expressions or the way he looks with a shy expression on his face at his neighbour, is worth praising. He should do more unconventional roles, such as this one.
2.Mohini(Antara Mali): Mohini, is a very modern girl. She likes to play video games, go to cinema halls and roaming around with her boyfriend Sameer. She is Vishnu Prasad`s neighbour and the only girl whom Vishnu Prasad loves a lot. Antara Mali suffers due to weak characterization. Her character is really half-baked and confused. Even more confused than Vishnu Prasad`s character. Also, you will feel, that she is trying to act and behave exactly like Urmila Matondkar. The only scene where she impresses is the one where Vishnu Prasad tells her that he is God.
3.Sameer(Raman Trikha): Sameer is Mohini`s boyfriend, of whom Vishnu Prasad is very jealous. He loves to bully and the worst thing about him is that he starts fighting anywhere, at any place. Raman Trikha does a decent job. He had to act casual and cool , and he does it well. He especially, acts well in the scene where Mohini takes him to a psychiatrist.
The rest do a good job, in their respective roles! Rasika Joshi as Vishnu Prasad`s mother plays the best character. She does an excellent job and you will be in splits, whenever she will appear on the screen. Raghuveer Yadav, as Vishnu Prasad`s helpless father, is also wonderful. Watch him out in the scene, where Vishnu Prasad reveals his secret to him. Govind Namdeo as the cop does a fine job.
THE STORY:
The story revolves around a young boy, Vishnu Prasad, whose existence doesn`t make any difference to anyone. People just laugh at him. What to do? He is the biggest loser, who can`t speak clearly nor can do any work without making any mistake. His mother always beats him and shouts at him, where as his dad, is the most helpless man, who can`t even shout at her wife. Living with such parents, Vishnu turns out to be a confused character. The only person, whom he loves is Mohini, who is his neighbour and whom he looks at through his window but there is a problem. Mohini has a boyfriend Sameer. One day, in a restaurant, Vishnu accidentally blinks at Mohini. When Mohini tells this thing to her boyfriend Sameer, he starts beating up Vishnu. As Vishnu feels insulted, he goes nearby a sea, where there is a statue of God. He asks God, that if he is so useless, then he should be disappeared. God listens to him and makes him invisible. When he realizes this thing, he feels very powerful. Now he can take revenge from Sameer, from the people who laughed at him and from his mother who used to beat him, without any reason.
THE WORK OF THE CREW:
Prawaal Raman, who previously directed ?Darna Mana Hai?, is back once again. He does a good job and many scenes are very interesting. The scene where Vishnu Prasad gets invisible and follows Mohini and Sameer is entertaining, where he hits Sameer on his head, and Mohini feels as if he has gone mad. The scene where Vishnu`s mother watches the toy of a monkey flying, is another scene, which can be classified as one of the best scenes in the film. Another entertaining scene is the one where Vishnu tells Mohini that he is God, and that she should leave Sameer. The bank robbery scene is also well shot and the motor cycle chase scene, which comes somewhere near to the climax will also entertain you very much.
In fact, there are many hilarious parts in this film. Screenplay is a minus point in this film. The film starts off as a gripping and an interesting movie, but somewhere in the second half, i t becomes confusing. The script of the film could have been better. Many sequences could have been written in a better way. Why does Vishnu tell everything to Mohini after the bank robbery is not well-explained. Then, Mohini`s character is not well-defined. There is a sudden change in Mohini`s heart about Vishnu. She starts feeling sorry for Vishnu, towards the climax. How come the woman, who used to remain so cool becomes so emotional and mature towards the end? How come she starts wearing eastern clothes in the second half, where as she used to wear western clothes, in the first half. Also , her relationship, with her parents as well as with her boyfriend is not well-defined. Her boyfriend kisses Mohini, infront of her parents!
The climax could also have been better, and it may disappoint some of the viewers. Editing is fine, and the film moves at a fast pace. Cinematography is excellent, as it is always in RGV films. Special effects are amazing! Amar Mohile`s music is poor and there was no need for songs (they were only there to show a little bit of Antara Mali`s skin), however, ?Gayab ho kar sab dikhta hai?, is very well picturised and so is ?Tumse Love Kitna?.
ON THE WHOLE:
?Gayab?, is a well-made movie, which has its share of flaws, but they can be avoided, as the film is entertaining. Though, the film is highly unrealistic, still it doesn`t fail to entertain you. Good direction, nice performances from Tusshar Kapoor, Rasika Joshi and Raghuvir Yadav and an interesting storyline make this movie worth a watch. Also, after such terrible new releases like
