Hi friends, here is your friend baljeet and today I am tell about you hard disc genral information. Hard disks are secondary storage devices that are being used in computers, and laptops from a very long time. As these are non-volatile memory, that means data resides on the disk even when the power is turned off; they are the ideal solution to store data in a computer or laptop permanently. They are popular because of two reasons:
1). They can store a huge amount of data. By that, I mean several Terabytes. 1 Terabyte is equal to 1024 GB. Which is sufficient to hold 1 lac(+) songs. In the early days, hard disks used to come in small capacity, like, 20, 40, 80, 100 GB. While 250 /500 GB is the minimum storage you get in modern computers. Which goes up to 1, 2, 3, 4TB.
2). They are relatively inexpensive as compared to the new generation Solid State Drives abbreviated as SSDs. In market, you can easily get a 1-2TB Hard Disk for about 5000-600, while for the same price, you get a 120 Gb SSD.
However, they have some disadvantages:-
( 1). They are short lived, as they contain mechanical parts. Overtime, these parts degrade and after a few years, the Hard Disk might eventually stop working. Due to one reason or another. There are many.
( 2). Slow data transfer speeds. My Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm HDD allows writes up to 35 Megabytes per second, which I think is fine for day to day use, however loading of programs and boot up get slow.
Some tips to keep your Hard Disk Drive Healthy:-
1) Do not turn off he computer from the main switch or unplug the power cable when the computer is in running condition. This is because Hard disks fail mostly due to Voltage and current fluctuations. Hence, It will be a good idea to buy a ups, so that power surges not harm your computer.
2) Defragment the HDD time to time. This will align the fragments of file present in your computer at one single unit, and it will eventually increase the loading of programs and files faster.
3) Delete unnecessary files and programs to free up the space on your Hard Disk drive.
4) Set up backups regularly so that you dont lose your data in case the drive fails.( Most important) . Although data can can be recovered from the HDDs, but its not guaranteed.
5) Moreover, you can find and install some Hard Drive Health Check Software. They will give you an idea how long your hard disk will last. So that you can replace it before it dies. Thanks for reading my information. Please rate my tips useful or very useful. Have a nice day.
