Does your make-up belong in the Lab?

It feels a bit weird writing on this predominantly female dominated area (my apologies to my male brethren who fancy dressing as women), but this review is a result of some conversations I had at a party this weekend, and I sincerely hope it will of some help to my friends of the fairer sex.

Women unknowingly feed their bodies a cocktail of upto 100 chemicals when applying make up every morning. Detergent, colors derived from coal tar and a product used in anti-freeze, are just some of the chemicals that you guys wear and absorb daily.(almost daily;-) Did you know that lipstick has the cancer causing coal tar-and that you are likely to swallow about 4.5 kg in your lifetime!

The hidden dangers in cosmetics range from allergies to chemicals that can cause cancer, depression, asthma and hormonal imbalance. Did you know that not one single brand on the market is chemical free! It doesn’t take more than a miniscule amount of a carcinogen or mutagen to alter a single cell’s DNA. The most dangerous are the preservatives called parabens. Check out

for more on the dangers of parabens. Parabens mimicked estrogens and could disturb your hormonal balance and cause dermatitis.

Lets take a look into some cosmetic concerns:

Cleansing creams: have Surfactants such as Sodium lauryl sulfate.

Toner: Contain parabens

Moisturizer: Propylene glycol, which is an anti-freeze. In areas of low humidity, it can remove water from skin! It is highly dangerous for people who suffer from liver or kidney disease.

Foundation: the powders are upto 80% talc, a known carcinogen.

Eyeliner and Mascara: Phenyl mercuric acetate(Mercury). This is a very strong toxin that affects your central nervous system.

Talc: Major contributor to ovarian cancer and known cause of breathing distress in infants.

Nail varnish: contains some of the most toxic substances in cosmetics including, toluene, a toxin that also affects the central nervous system.

Writing this review makes me appreciate the full meaning of the saying, “beauty is skin deep”! Also, it gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, “natural beauty”!

While I hope that you will reduce the use of cosmetics, I wonder how it will affect the whole “shringaar”(make up) thing…I mean, you do use make up to look good to us guys, don’t you? Uh-uh.I think I am wading in deep waters here…all my senses are crying “Danger.you are about to be blasted by the female populace.”, so I better keep my Mouth Shut.

I hope this has been of some help to all you lasses.
