~The Bollywood Beneath~

Bollywood - the religion we all follow very closely and make a concious effort to go the mandir, gurdwara, church, masjid(cinema obviously) every Friday. If we cannot go to the pilgirm place then we make an effort to do our religious prayers at home(wathing movies on video or DVD).

We admire Bollywood. We love Bollywood. We are a part of Bollywood because every writer on MS writes reviews on Bollywood related issues, and by doing so shows his or her passion and interest in Bollywood.

As it is possible to write a whole book(and a very thick one too) about Bollywood, I will only talk about some points of Bollywood. Such as box office related issues - hit movies, flop movies, etc. The authenticity of the award ceremonies, who really is the best actor in todays times and how can we prove that, and the important ingredients in making a hit film, and the important ingredients in making a good film.

A director can make a movie for two reasons. One for critical acclaim and to satisfy the artist within himself, or to earn some money at the box office.  No director likes to admit that he is making a movie to make some money. However, it is pretty damn obvious when the only intention of the director is to cash in on the big bucks, Subhash Ghai’s Yaadein.?

However, fortunately there are directors in Bollywood who can create contentful cinema and register a blast at the box office. This list of directors is headed by the Yash Raj Production company - Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra. In my opinion two extremely talented directors. However I do believe that Yash Chopra is a better director than his son, but Aditya Chopra is a better writer than his father.

Next on the list is Karan Johar. Obsessed with K, he has delivered three superhits and one semi hit to his name. Pyar Dosti Hai, Dosti Pyar Hai, kal nahin hoga, lekin parson ko kuch kuch hoga.my point being there is not much versatility(among his first three movies). With the exception of Kal Ho Na Ho, his other two movies were rather cliched, with not so strong storylines. However, it was his entertaining execution of the movie which makes them enjoyable. He tried to go different in Kaal and succeeded partly.

Then there is Sanjay Leela Bhansali, a master craftsman, the most sensitive director in India, the magician. He truly believes in different cinema os definetly one of the best. Also the likes of Rajkumar Santoshi, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Ashutosh Gowariker and Farhan Akhtar are some directors who only produce cinema of excellence.

In my view the Box Office result does matter but only partly. The box office result is the financial side of film making but surely it is not the only or the most important side of film making. Even if the movie bombs at the box office, that alone cannot be enough to term the movie as a failure. Reviewers like Taran Adarsh rate the movie not just according to their calibre but also whether he thinks the movie will work or not. That can be the only reason why he gave Black a 2 star rating.

There is a greater need of movie reviewers who will review the movie based entirely upon its content and not whether it will or will not work at the box office. That is why it is important that these reviewers are from the audience and who better than the writers at MS, to do this. The writers from MS are members of the public. We represent the’janta janardhan’ and who better than ourselves to speak about a movie that we liked or disliked than some one single critic who is speaking on behalf of us.

The Awards

And the winner is .Shahrukh Khan. I have got used to hearing this. Alrthough I personally think he did deserve to win last year(for Veer Zaara), there have been times when I think to myself.no, never.

We can be angry at the awards and say we don’t believe in them. However, I think that rather than losing our faith in them we need to bring about a change. For example a parent may become frustrated at their child because they are not learning properly and not interested in studying. However, one cannot expect that parent to become frustrated and lose faith in the child.

The Awards are not just an object for awarding the artists, it is like a deeply significant emblem of appreciation for the hard work they put in. Aamir Khan said he did not believe in awards - however, even he accepted his award for Lagaan at the Zee Cine Awards. Although he wasn’t there because he was shooting for another movie, he recorded a clip saying thank you and how much the award meant to him.

Agreed that sometimes the awards are a farce and they need any excuse to give an award to SRK, but one must have faith and hope that things will change in the future. The effort of all actors should be appreciated and not just the commercial mainstream artists.

Creme De La Creme

How is it possible to assess who is the best? How can we choose between Amitabh Bachan, Pankaj Kapoor and Nasseerudin Shah? Is SRK better than Hrithik? Is Rani overshadowing Preity?

Are we supposed to see the box office stats or see who wins the award? Or do we visit websites and see poll results? The true answer is that it is almost impposible to tell. What some see as truly different and unique, other see as badly executed and a bunch of nonsense. One must learn to form a non-biased judgement of a particular artist, and at the same time respect the opinion of others because everyone feels differently.

Looking at the box office stats is ambigous - for example why was Hum Tum a superhit? Was it because of Rani or Saif? Seeing who wins the awards is also ambigous because Sharukh may win the Filmfare Award for Swades and Saif may win the National Award for Hum Tum.oops maine kuch galat kaha? Anyways thats a whole different story.

The Ingredients of A Hit Movie

1) Sharukh Khan in the title role

2) Salman Khan in a supporting role, or special appearance

3) The theme of the movie should be a love story

4) Skin show by the actresses

5) Constant patriotic references.Jai Hind or singing of the national anthem.

6) Exquisite foreign locales

7) A host of special appearances by superstars.

8) The insertion of either a Jonny Lever or Rajpal Yadav for comedy moments.

9) Just cast Mallika Sherawat, Meghna Naidu, or Payal Rahtogi .need I say more?

The Ingredients of A Good Movie

1) Screenplay - An interesting and original screenplay is required

2) Screenplay - The next step is to ensure that it is narrated in an engaging manner

3) Screenplay - The characterisations should be well developed and presented in a unique fashion.

4) Screenplay - Originality should be present as much as possible and it should not be copied from an old Hindi movie or a Hollywood flick.

5) Screenplay - Cross check the screenplay to see if it can be improved and whether there is more scope of performance for certain characters.

6) Execution - The director needs to understand the heart and soul of the story and screeplay and needs to direct accordingly.

7) Music should be placed accordingly in the movie and not just for the sake of it.

8) Casting should be done wisely. There is no point in casting all superstars just for the sake of it. If necessary then one superstar(who is also an able actor) should be cast to ensure that the movie gains some recognition among the audience.

9) Cinematography - The movie should look good visually. Only then will it catch the eye of the audience. A classic example of this is David Dhawan’s MSK, it was a visually stunning movie and gave David Dhawan his first superhit after a long time.

Those were my views. Some will agree some will not. If you agree then comment. If you don’t agree .then what the hell yaar comment zaroor karna.
