Float Mobile Agent

First, I think this review demands a separate category, probably named ’’Mobile Agents’’ but I had to post it here since I’m not aware how to create one.

I’ve not written much since I try and write reviews which are so informative that it changes the way one looks at certain things. Today once again I’m on the keyboard to write about a mobile agent software which sure would be able to change ones view on mobile phones and their connectivity.

You should be asking what is a mobile agent ?

A mobile agent is a software which can sit on a PC or a Palmtop which has got power to control your mobile in various ways and vice-versa. The mobile agent that I’m using and talking about is called ’’Float Mobile Agent’’ which is primarily made for Sony Ericsson (SE) phones. This is an open source software which means you can down & use it for free.

Till I discovered Float I wondered how much one can put communication technologies like Bluetooth to work. And trust me I was amazed to see the power of Float with Bluetooth working. I think you would have enough reason to buy a Bluetooth dongle after you see Float for yourself.

Float gives an MS Outlook like interface for your mobile. Its like expanding your mobile with a 15’’ screen and 101 key keyboard.

Once you run Float and connect it to your mobile via Bluetooth (even data cable would work) it gives you loads of information of your mobile in a single screen. There are information which you would have never known about your mobile.

The right side of the screen shows among few things like how many times you have put the battery to charge (useful since every battery has life based on charge cycles), or type of battery and how much more minute will it last before you need to recharge. It tells you the phones firmware info, service provider & signal strength, calls you have made and missed, SMS inbox & outbox, address book and much more.

On the left hand side of the screen you have the phone explorer which gives you access to all of the above plus pictures, sounds, themes, profiles, organizer etc. Float synchronizes with the mobile and downloads all the contents under these categories. You can also edit your contacts and synchronize it back to the mobile. Thus you must’ve known by know that how easy it is to transfer data and files between the mobile and the PC.

Now about the best part, just keep your mobile in a corner and voila, my SMSs starts to pop up on my computer’s screen and I can reply just by clicking the reply button attached to the popup, type in with the computer’s keyboard and click send. Similarly my calls also pops up on the screen and I can use computers headphones & microphone to take the calls. As a result it also allows me to use the computer to take calls hands free or as speaker phone. You can also record your conversation on your PC.

All this was controlling the phone with the PC, now comes another surprise, controlling the PC with the phone. Float loads a menu system under T610>connectivity>accessories from where you can control various applications like winamp, mediaplayer, dvd-player, etc. You can also put your PC on hibernate or shut it down, use phone’s joystick as a mouse and to forward powerpoint slides during a presentation. It also has a neat proximity feature, you can set Float to lock your PC automatically when you move away from it (obviously with the mobile in your pocket) and unlock it when you return. Magic isn’t it?

It has got scripting too, where you can write in your own scripts to control your PC, obviously you need knowledge of writing scripts.

I would now leave you with the link where you can download and read more about the magic of float. I’m sure it has all the power of expanding ones perspective of mobile communication.

Hey, just before I finish let me tell you that this application was particularly made to work with SE phones but does work with few others too. Go through the discussion forum on the site to see users testing it with different make and models.

Do write in to me if you liked the above info and the mobile agent software, I would be happy to know someone got his perspective right !
