What does 2G, G, E, 3G, H, H+ and 4G symbols mean?

We all have seen these symbols on our cell phone screen while surfing the internet. Without going into details, I will try to explain what these symbols signify.


2G= GSM(Global System for Mobile Communications)


Speed: 14.4 kbps/sec


G= GPRS(General Packet Radio Service)


Speed: 53.6 kbps/sec


E= EDGE(Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution)


Speed: 217.6 kbps/sec


3G= UTMS(Universal Mobile Telecommunications System)


Speed: 384 kbps/sec


H= HSPA(High Speed Packet Access)


Speed: 7.3 mbps/sec


H+= HSPA(Evolved High Speed Packet Access)


Speed: 14.4 mbps/sec


4G LTE= Long Term Evolution


Speed: 100 mbps/sec


4G LTE A= Long Term Evolution Advanced


Speed: 1 gbps/sec
