Say goodbye to some more DOT COMS.

Just a few notes on Free E-Mail services.

When I first started using the internet, there were so many Free E-Mail services, that it was hard to choose from. They got you hooked with the word Free.

These services then sold your e-mail address(that’s how they made their money!)to hundreds of different lists, that in turn sold you name to even more lists, and the junk mail started rolling in.

I remember at times, I would sign on and find 20-30 pieces of absolute junk mail. Trying to sell me things, offering me discounted things, wanting to sign me up for this or that. Being new, at that time, I would answer each e-mail I got, sign up for a lot of junk, (Like contests, give aways, etc.) and then wonder why I was now getting 40 pieces of junk mail every day instead of 30.

Most of the Free accounts wound up costing me, maybe not in money, but in time! A lot of time. Time I had to spend getting off all those lists.

Also, if you think about it, a lot of those so called Free services, were only free for the basic service. If you wanted to get the complete package..(like sometimes even being able to answer e-mails sent to you!), you had to sign up for their ’’gold, silver, platnium, star, extra, ( whatever thay wanted to call it) service. And those services cost you money.

Don’t get me wrong, there are still some good Free services out there. There alway will be. Lycos and Hot Mail are both still thriving, and good. It’s basically, the small independent services that get you hooked and then make you suffer.

Let’s just hope the rotten apples that spoil the whole barrel go the way of the dinosaur, and become extinct.
