There are a couple of practices I have noticed which I feel can result in accidents unless the driving public at large is made aware of them. One of them is the use of the right-side indicator light( i.e. blinker) to indicate permission to the following vehicle to overtake. This can be dangerous in instances when the indicating vehicle actually wants to move or turn to the right and the following vehicle misinterprets the signal as permission / invitation to overtake. The consequences can be imagined, particularly at high speed. The correct method of indicating permission to overtake is the use of the left-side indicator light. By doing this even if the vehicle wants to turn left it will not come in the way of the following vehicles overtaking manoeuvre on the right-hand side.
The second practice, or should I say tendency, is that most drivers( I would say more than 90% of them) switch on their headlights too late in the evening. It is always better to switch on ones vehicles headlights( not just parking lights) at the onset of evening and not wait for the sky to get darker. We should realise that the purpose of a vehicles lights is primarily to make it more visible to other road-users and not just to illuminate the road ahead of it. On many occasions I have seen drivers who apparently forgot to switch on their lights well past darkness. What is worse, the lights of many commercial vehicles — trucks, buses, autorickshaws etc. do not function properly. Personally, I find this infuriating. While on the subject of lights, drivers should also remember to keep their headlights on dip and not on high beam. Keeping headlights on high beam can blind not just on-coming traffic but also drivers in front through their mirrors.
The third point I wish to make is that all car owners should get a left hand side rear-view mirror affixed on their car if they do not have one already. I have found it immensely useful not just while driving but also while parking. Adjust it in such a way that you are able to see a very small part of the left side of your car and the rest of the mirror gives you a good view of the road behind. This mirror will help you a great deal in enhancing your situational awareness. You should check this mirror before moving or turning to the left — it will make you aware of vehicles on the left which were earlier in your blind-spot and also those vehicles which try to overtake from the left. You will not have to twist your neck any more!
I hope you find my suggestions useful.
