No sense in the sensex

I’m back with silly comments and acerbic remarks and to make you think. What is the sensex and why is it important? The sensex is a list of 100 companies stocks being traded on the bombay stock exchange, which contribute to about 30-40% of the volume of total trade. The Sensex figures are calculated in a very complicated mathematical ritual. It seems that the sensex has become the benchmark for the country’s wealth, because every Rajiv, sanjay and Sanjiv (and the odd Chidambrams) quote it, talk about it passionately and generally make a big song and dance about it. If you have invested money in any of the shares that make up the list of companies in the Sensex(short for sensitive exchange, probably), then you will also be caught up in this confusing and media-hyped world, where according to the sensex, millionaires are made every day. I wish it were true.

Try and make sense of all the hoopla surrounding the sensex and you will probably need a shrink at the end of the exercise. Just be careful with your money--whether you trust the list of the sensex companies, or whether you keep it with you. And watch out. the sensex is going to make us the 4th largest economy, and don’t think about the grim flood situation, climatic changes, Indian railways, Naxalites, mafia et al.
