Virtual workplaces - real solution

Virtual Workplaces - real solution

Ok- Internet has killed distance - or has it?

The sight of people travelling long distances to reach their work certainly makes me feel it has not. Catch a glimpse of Mumbai’s local tains- and you would know better. The peak hours see these trains carrying loads and loads of people rushing their way to work.

Problems

  • Railways are cheapest and fastest medium- everyone - even people wanting to travel short distances use it - resulting in those actually needing the services to face difficulties

  • Road transport is neither cheap nor fast - even from Borivli to Kandivli people don’t prefer buses but actually board trains

  • Employers don’t trust employees - else there are so many jobs that can be done from home - writing is a good example here

  • People travelling for 4 hrs in a day feel that it is a lot of hard work while it actually is a waste of precious time

  • More and more people want bikes and cars and while that is okay, if seen under the backdrop of existing road infrastructure - one would realise that there is flooding of vehicles on poor roads. This is due to the association of auto producers with loan providers and big aspirations of the youth today

  • Managers and CEOs prefer car travel even though they can use public transport and reach faster. What kind of show off is this? It is an illusion. They actually waste more time

Solutions

  • Strongly discourage use of local trains for short distances

  • Make bus travel and road travel cheaper and faster

  • Have separate holidays(weekly offs) for different industries

  • Let work be done from home - whatever work can be done

  • Have a change of mindset - respect safety of life more than punctuality

  • CEOs and managers should use public transport wherever they can and use private vehicles only when there is a need to do so

  • Pooling - people with common destinations should go together in one vehicle and avoid unnecessary traffic

  • Aspirations should be meaningful. Having a nice bike but no road to ride on is senseless. There should be a relationship between the capacity of roads for vehicles and production of automobiles.

  • Else involve all vehicle manufactures in road development projects

One big solution

All software professionals should promote and encourage working from home. Virtual workplaces are the real solution

Webspace is more important than landspace

Else we will just be talking about the advantages of internet and not utilising them in the way they should be

Software professionals - please note !

Thanks and regards
