UPDATE: I was just informed that getting your license in India is much easier, so I guess this review should be re titled Its not as easy as you think...in the US(thanks Suyog, for the information)
Getting a Drivers License goes hand in hand with my other review about driving.
But let me begin this review with, Be Prepared!.
Before getting a drivers license, you must go to the department of motor vehicles and ask for a driving manual.
Read this manual, from cover to cover......and then read it again and again, until you can almost memorize it. This manual tells you all the rules and regulations of the road.
It has pictures of the different road signs. It tells you what areas there are automatic speed limits. It diagrams how to park, turn and pass other motor vehicles.
This manual will also give you questions (and answers) that are the most frequently asked by new drivers.
There is even an area of the manual where accidents are diagramed and you have to make the determination as to who was in the wrong and who was in the right.
When you have the manual just about memorized........comes the driving lessons. Be it by a family member or friend, or be it from a licensed driving school, this is where all that reading comes in handy.
You now have to go to the department of motor vehicles, take a written test on what youve learned from that manual, pass that and get a driving permit.(Still not a license yet!)
You get in the drivers seat of a car for the first time and understandably, you are nervous. First things first. Put on your seat belt, put the key in the ignition and youre off for your first driving lesson.
Listen!!! to what your driving instructor says. Follow directions, keep your eyes and ears open at all times, and soon youll be on the road to your drivers license.
Dont think that 1 or 2 lessons are all youll need either. You need weeks of proper drivers training to assure yourself and your instructor that you truly do know how to read the signs, park the car, go the proper speed limit and feel secure enough to drive on your own.
Now, you think thats it? Nope, once again you go to the department of motor vehicles to take your actual driving test, with a state certified instructor, who will sit beside you as you drive. This instructor will tell you exactly what to do and when to do it. If you do not follow the instructors orders to a tee........you fail and are back to stage one.......reading the manuals again.
If you do pass, remember, this does not give you a license to talk on your cell phone, comb your hair or read the newspaper when you drive. It gives you the privilege to drive a motor vehicle. Dont abuse that privilege or your license will be a useless piece of paper when it gets suspended or revoked!
Obey the road rules you took the time to read, study and memorize.
Happy motoring! Drive safely and good luck on your test. =)
