When all else fails...

I want to start this review by distinguishing between pimples and acne.  Pimples are something that almost everyone in their lifetime will get the odd one of.  They are usually linked to growing up etc.

Acne is a chronic skin condition that starts around puberty and while it should end by the time puberty finishes can go on for many years as an adult.  Acne is characterised by a large number of not unusually pus filled spots and can also be accompanied by cysts etc.

Acne is linked to hormonal levels although not necessarily abnormal levels.  A lot of the time it is hereditary and so if your mother/father had acne there is a likelihood you will too.

You will read a lot of stuff about stay away from oily food/fried food/chocolates etc.  This is not true if you suffer from true acne there is nothing that you can/can not eat that makes it better.

Similarly a lot of herbal cures can often aggravate the condition and make it worse. I found out I was allergic to gram flour and every time I used it it simply made it worse.

If you have acne you should see a qualified practitioner. If you want to go alternative thats upto you but see someone reputable.

Acne although not life threatening can shatter your self confidence especially when it goes on for years.  You can also get bad scarring and it is best to see a professional who can advise ways of minimising the risk of scarring.

There are many possible routes to control acne rather than cure it.  Unfortunately until your body is ready to it never stops therefore its control rather than cure.

Firstly you have your standard over the counter drugs like clearasil etc.  These contain benzoyl peroxide. The concentration of this ingredient is normally quite low in these.  You can get creams prescribed that have a much higher concentration.

You also get retin A a cream which contain vitamin A.

If you move into the big boys world of prescription drugs then often you are prescribed antbiotics. These work by dealing with the bacterial infections.

You may also if you have severe acne be prescribed ro-accutane which is a drug derived from vitamin A.  This is very good on acne but often has a skin drying effect.

Lastly you may have drugs that actually work by  controlling the hormonal levels.  In women this is usually via the contraceptive pill of some sorts.

I still suffer from acne although it is a lot less than it used to be.  As a sufferer I have gone through the whole range of drugs and have now found combinations of things that work for me.  If you suffer from acne then you need to take the time out and find what works for you best.  I was lucky in that I have skin that heals well.  Others are not that lucky.
