I use old design razor blades on the holders - with no gel or cream. Just wet the beard well with water - ( warm in winter ), & shave away - no problems at all. Gels or creams are just a hindrance & messy. The blades last me weeks - though never of Gilette, but Laser or Topaz Gold. The MNC blades are costly, yet less effective. Just ensure the right blade angle & adequate gap between the blade & the holder for hair to pass thru.
The twin blade cartridges rarely last more than a few days - the inner blade gets jammed with hair, once the main blade gets blunt.
