Bridget Jones is the mother of the chick-lit for modern readers. She makes you laugh with her attempts to snag a man, moan on her loneliness, attempts to get thin and amuses you with her clumsiness. Rupa Gulabs answer to Bridget Jones is Arti. Born and bred in Calcutta with a degree in English Lit. Our desi bj claims to be very well read, mentioning some literary heavyweights that would make ordinary readers of pulp shrivel up and die. Arti is witty at times, throws attitude and boasts about her superior literary and musical tastes. Ok dear, reading some serious books doesnt make you more intelligent than your fellow mortals. Artis purpose in life seems to be (like BJ) to snag some nice caring likeminded man. Rather suprisingly, its her mother who eggs her on to move to Mumbai from Calcutta to get a life, threatening marriage otherwise.
REally ? I wish I had a mother like hers.
As soon as she arrives in she gets involved with men. Not as lonely and desperate as BJ. Like BJ and calls her men by their characteristics.. Low Life, New One, Software, Wildlife Photographer. Some are snobbishly dismissed from her lives for pronouncing Lion as Loin, some for being cheapstakes, some for not kissing her, some for kissing other girls. Ultimately she does find her dream man and lives happily ever after. Thankfully diminshing the chances of a sequel. Unless she wants to do something funny on a former goodtime gal stuck in motherhood.
Only thing interesting about Arti is her addiction to cough syrup and good life. She couldnt have married a guy who could only afford a limp dosa in Indian Coffee House.
It is an easy read, ok for airline waiting rooms and bad days in the loo. But for someone who quotes big names in literature, it is too indifferent an effort. Arti wouldnt be seen dead holding this book.
