G(rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr8)Mail

Do you know which one word means fast, slick, sturdy, safe, ... yep its GMail. Although it was announced on March 31, I got to test(taste) it on August 31, when a cousin of mine sent me an invite. I signed up, and was amazed to see its features.

Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace

Google offers a whole 1000 MB, yep 1048576000 B of space to store all mails of your life. You will never need to delete anything again. Size of attachment is also quite large. Though I couldn’t find out what is the maximum size of an attachment, I have already sent a file that is about 7.5 MB in size.

Google Search

All features of Google’s popular search engine is integrated in GMail. You can use the search engine to efficiently find out any mail, by searching for the sender, receiver or body field.

Fast and how

GMail is pretty fast, compared to Yahoo! or Rediffmail. Utilizing the same window space without refreshing, leads to faster loading.

Labels

GMail has this unique feature of using labels to distinguish between messages rather than keeping them in folders. Labelling makes it easier to find the message, and also all messages can be seen at the same time, irrespective of which label it belongs to.

Conversations

GMail stores all mails sent/received in the form of Conversations, so that all communication between two persons can be seen at any time.

Archive

GMail also has a feature called Archiving. You can archive a message/conversation, and put it away. You don’t have to see it everytime you log on to your account inbox. They are stored in a separate section called All Mails, and you can view them anytime you want.

Contact List

GMail stores all received and sent mail addresses in Contacts automatically, and its auto-addressing feature makes job easier.

No PopUps

There are absolutely no pop-ups, pop-unders or other kinds of ’’shouting’’ ads. It has simple context-sensitive ads(Google AdSense), which stay put at one side of the window.

Filters, Signature, Spam....

Alongwith all these features, GMail also includes the regular features such as filtering of messages, adding a custom signature, spam filter, etc.

Something which I don’t like

Apart from all these good features, one thing which I dont like about GMail is that it doesn’t support Opera, although it supports Firefox which is still in preview stages!!!

All in all, GMail is all set to redefine the way we use email. And all this in Beta(testing) stage. Just imagine what it will be when they release it for the public domain !!!
