A Magnificent Masterpiece

Hi Friends, This compiled review of mine is of an all-time classic gangster movie of all times that has surpassed great heights in character and history and has been the benchmark of great Hollywood cinema. There have been many movies based on the gangster and underworld theme till now in the history of Hollywood but this movie stands up till now as the most dynamic, engrossing and mind blowing entertainer till date. Even in bollywood many movies starting from “Dharmatma”, starring Feroze khan to the last one called “Sarkar” starring Amitabh Bachchan tried to imitate this classic movie called “THE GODFATHER”.

One of the greatest films of all-time that’s been imitated but never duplicated, The Godfather based on Mario Puzo’s novel is one of the greatest crime stories ever told. Unlike previous mob films in the age of cinema, this film is entirely about family rather than crime. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Godfather is in some ways a family tragedy about a don and his relationship with crime and his family and how he tries to balance his role as a family man and a crime boss. Starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, John Cazale, and many more.

"The Movie allows us to look at the Italian Mafia from the inside. With no outside reality evident, we are allowed to form bonds with the characters. Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) becomes a heroic figure as he presides over his family. Sonny, Fredo and Michael are the princes of his castle, waiting to continue the father’s gruelling work.

Coppola draws his audience into the world of the Mafia from the very first scene. On the day of his daughter’s wedding, the Godfather sits in his darkened study conducting various acts of business. No Sicilian can refuse a request made to him on his daughter’s wedding day. So the people come to their Godfather to receive the justice the outside world denies them. Mingled with shots from the wedding party outside, the Godfather promises to avenge the rape of a man’s daughter. He secures a job for his godson, which culminates with the famous horse’s head scene. Then he shows his more compassionate side by guaranteeing that an Italian immigrant will gain citizenship, so that he might marry the daughter of the local baker. In this series of scenes we get a full idea of the personality that is the Godfather and know what it means to be part of his world and family. Family does not mean only those with blood ties. Family is anyone who shows the proper respect and affection. When one does that, he becomes a member of the family. Then "if you should make enemies then they would become my enemies. Then they would fear you."

The plot is as basic as they come. Marlon Brando is the Godfather, the head of family. As time goes by he prepares to handle control of the business to his sons. The oldest, Sonny (James Caan) is the hothead in the family. He has the passion to lead but not the sensibility and temperament. Fredo (John Cazale) is the middle son who lacks the intelligence and the heart to lead men. He is a forgotten figure for much of the saga, more of a joke than a serious member of the family business. Thus it will fall to the youngest son Michael (Al Pacino) Michael never wanted any part of the family business. Rather than staying at home, he went to war in Europe and returned as a hero. It was only when his father nearly died at the hands of his enemies did Michael see and embrace what the future held for him.

I will not reveal more as I think that I have given the basic interpretation of the movie in a way that it creates curiosity and enthusiasm in the minds of friends who still have not seen this ultimate classic.

This will forever be the signature film of two of America’s finest actors in Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. James Caan provides the fire that makes Sonny the most compassionate of all characters. John cazale has given an appropriate performance as fredo as per the demand of his role. It is impossible to watch "The Godfather" and not feel the emotion that is poured into every scene and every line of a dialogue.

The Godfather is a classic film that remains a landmark in American cinema as it inspired generations of actors and filmmakers to rethink the landscape of filmmaking. It has a love story, violence, wit, and drama that has something for everyone. For Francis Ford Coppola, it remains his best film to date

The saga continues with "The Godfather II." They are the only two films from the same series to each win the Best Picture Academy Award. The most difficult argument to take up is which the better of the two films is? No other "crime" or "gangster" movies come close to providing what "The Godfather" saga has given us. The raw emotion and drama have left their permanent mark on the minds of everyone who have seen it. They are by far the greatest films in the history of Movie Making.

The story of a family, The Godfather.
