Godmother: Shabana Azmi

Godmother is a brilliant film, with great acting, story line and characterizations. This is a movie about a woman who after the death of her husband gains and enjoys the trappings of power. Having been a wife and mother, she inherits her husbands dynasty, which she rules with the tenacity and courage afforded her position. She really does dare to rule, and is vilified for her audacity to take her desire for control to another level. The music is beautiful, and the dance number by Shabana Azmi, and the women in her community is not to be missed. Her son becomes pivotal in her demise. She has given him everything that he has ever required, and also some lessons in life better not learned. He sees her tenacity, and decides that he will inherit the throne without doing the work. His inability to work for what he wants, and her desire to appease him create a waterfall from which she never escapes. The moral in this story is that violence really does begat violence, and that in the end love for humanity is what really matters. Love doesn’t question, but in the end we must give answers.
