Hard to keep your cool

On April 17, 2010, I posted the review entitled Noisy refrigerator. As there was no response from Godrej,  which is said to work closely with mouthshut.com, I wrote to support@mouthshut.com" target="_blank"> support@mouthshut.com on May 8 saying Godrej had still not responded. On May 24, I got an e-mail from a Mr Rajan of Godrej & Boyce, Mumbai, asking for our fridge model, our address, telephone number etc. Then two engineers from Godrej’s Bangalore office visited our house. They measured the noise level and decided that they would replace the compressor with a new one within two days. A technician came the very next day, May 27. The company official, who offered to send the technician around six in the evening, had been asked to send the technician the next morning because power cuts are common in the evening and night.

But the man came after 6 pm as per the company personnel’s convenience and fitted a new compressor amid power cuts and line tripping, with the aid of an emergency light!. The technician gave his final okay only at 8.50 pm though he had entered time in at 6.10 pm and time out at 7.10 pm even before starting on the job. Sheer overconfidence. He even wanted me to sign the job card before the compressor was fitted but I did not oblige. (is this how service guys function generally?) At 8.50 pm, I was asked to furnish a photostat copy of the purchase invoice, which was impossible at my age. When asked to collect it the next morning, the technician himself took the invoice and made a copy. The new compressor is labelled ’PowerCool’, which was apparently not the case with the one replaced. It is not clear whether the new compressor carries a fresh five year guarantee or whether it is an apt replacement. The company has not yet confirmed this aspect.

We have no complaints yet but  are keeping our fingers crossed hoping the fridge will survive the power fluctuations and fickle power supply in Bangalore. By the way, the Godrej Eon boasts of ’stabiliser free operation’. As advised by the dealer however, we have been using a voltage stabiliser from the beginning. Funnily, the Godrej technician who replaced the compressor suggested a more sophisticated stabiliser.

Does it mean that Godrej’s stabiliser free operation claim is not vouched for by its own service department?
