Golden Dragon, Kolkata/Calcutta:
I have been a resident of Kolkata for the past 16 years and I wasn’t aware of the existence of Golden Dragon restaurant for 14 of those 16 years! It was in only in 2006, upon the insistence of a dear friend that I decided to check out the restaurant and it is till date one of the best decisions I have taken! I kid u not! The food at this restaurant is to die for! I have braved sun, rain, floods, and grueling schedules to have lunch at this place whenever I have had the craving for good Chinese food.
The restaurant is located on Free School Street, off the food heaven of Kolkata – Park Street. It is bang opposite another well known Chinese restaurant – Tung Fong. But while Tung Fong is huge in size, Golden Dragon holds its own in spite of its tiny size. It holds only about 50 people but the food is the best Chinese food u can sample in Calcutta and it is great value for money. The eatery has no frills – no expensive cutlery or snooty waiters and dazzling ambience. It has the typical Chinese lamps and linen and the ambience is simple and decent. The waiters are courteous and the man who owns the place often takes your orders himself and will make sure that your favorite dish is cooked just the way u like it. It is cozy and romantic too, thanks to the red lamps that hang on each table.
The dishes that u must sample at Golden Dragon are:
Thai soup
The Golden Dragon special fried rice
Chicken Hakka noodles
Chicken gravy(Schezwan) noodles
Chilly Pork( THE BEST DISH on the whole menu)
And, CAPSICUM chicken.
The portions are generous and the norm is to split one dish into 2. you can have hearty meal for two for around Rs. 130 which is amazing given the fact that u may have to dish out Rs. 500 for a good meal for two at nearby eateries on park street. and guess wat? the food at this place is so authentic that it is always choc-a-bloc with customers, many of whom are local chinese residents of the city! Golden Dragon is THE place to go if ur looking for great chinese food in Calcutta. u can even go2d eatery alone - no one’s gonna stare at u but it’s always nice 2 have friends, family or a special one wid u. dont miss the CHILLY PORK!;-)
