Ram-Leela :- Tragedy That Depicts Pain

GOLIYON KI RASLEELA – RAMLEELA: - A TRAGEDY THAT DEPICTS PAIN.

Why Sanjay Leela Bhansali why? This is the question that I would like to begin with. What were you literally trying to portray from this movie? What can a rivalry lead to? Or what internal issues could lead up to? Or what is the outcome of love?

It is a 2hr 35min movie which is very colorful in its own. It is being shot in the remote village areas and is a story between 2 rivals whose rivalry dates back to 500 years in the history. Wow, so exciting to watch. Well, the beginning itself signaled what was to come ahead. It begins with full on selling of guns and the urge for finishing the opposition for whatever bizarre the reason could be. I won’t mention the reason though.

Amidst all the fighting, there’s the main lead of the movie that is least concerned and instead just spends his life enjoying with friends and flirting with girls. His entry song video shows girls so crazy for him as if there is no one better than him. He stops his elder brother from killing a person and he is being criticized by all for it. He tells to bring peace and shake hands with the opposition and he is being threatened by his own family for it.

The entry of the female lead is even more deadly. It is on the occasion of holi and the male lead(Ram) along with his friends visits the opposition’s mansion for it. Both the leads Ram and Leela see each other and fall instantly in love. Ram is greeted with a kiss as a token of putting color while celebrating holi. They sing a song and it all begins. Ram is totally craved by the beauty and grace of Leela and he just can’t resist. He dares to visit her place at night. They meet, exchange nos. and kisses, discuss that they are rivals and so on.

In the mean time, Leela’s marriage has been fixed with an archaeologist from London. Dhangor is the character played by Supriya Pathak who is the head of a community and the mother of Leela. On being challenged by Ram, Leela visits his community. In Ram’s shop, they again sing, kiss and do all the rubbish stuff. Maybe love is all about kissing for Mr. Bhansali I guess. The texts that Leela read out as were shown to be sent by Ram were way too horrible to bear.

A random fun cum fight leads to the death of Ram’s elder brother. As a consequence to it, Ram kills Leela’s elder brother. The bitterness just got stronger. But there was no stopping the love that they had for each other. So they decide to run away to stay happily ever after. They escape and go to some other place for survival. But life isn’t so easy isn’t it! You can’t escape from this cruel world. You will get caught at some point of time.

Betrayals led to them being caught and brought back to where they belong. It all changed after that. Ram was made the new leader or so called Don of his village. He had complete authority now.

Leela on the other hand was again being forced to marry that man that I had mentioned above. She said she would not and on challenging her mother, what Supriya Ji did was something devastating. How can someone give such a treatment to their own blood and daughter? His was the worst scene of the movie. How cruel and bad can a human being be? This was really unbelievable.

Ram always wanted to bring peace between the 2 communities. Rasila(Richa Chaddha) was the bhabhi of Leela. On being forced by Leela, she went to inform Ram about Leela’s marriage and that Leela would meet him. What transpired was a shambolic incident which was a disgrace to say the least. But in response to it, what did the other community do? They went for the same thing with Ram’s bhabhi(Barkha Bisht). She just somehow survived. The thing was they would match anything with everything. How would a country come up when internal rivalries are so terrifying?

Ram and Dhangor meet and Ram was invited for Navratri pooja. What transpired after that and how the story unfolded towards the end is all what Ram Leela is all about. It is a big time disappointment in the offering once again from Mr. Bhansali.

Coming to the technical aspects, the movie had a story which was fully filled with love, hatred and violence. I somehow just couldn’t connect with it. Direction was Sanjay Leela Bhansali was his typical type. It was good none the less. Screenplay was fairly good while the cinematography lacked innovation. Dialogues were written by Siddharth-Garima but barring a few of them, they were very ordinary. They just could not create an impact. Editing is satisfactory.

A lot was talked about a brilliant on-screen chemistry between Ranveer  & Deepika. But I could not see much of it. Coming to the performances, Ranveer was better than what he has been so far in his journey as an actor in Bollywood. Deepika looked good but I would again say she is not a great actress. She should be happy with the fact that all her films are doing really well at the box-office. As expected, Supriya Pathak delivers a phenomenal performance. Every time she comes on screen, the performance enhances to another level. Well done. All other actors including Richa Chaddha, Barkha Bisht, Abhimanyu Singh and others were good in what they had. The best character for me was that of Barkha Bisht. She was superb and comes up with the best scene of the movie towards the end.

Music by Sanjay Leela Bhansali is good. Ang Laga De by Aditi Paul is definitely going to be in my top 5 for 2013. It should have been fully shot though. Shreya Ghoshal’s Dhoop is another gem which somehow doesn’t find a place in the movie. How can you make such a melodious song and not have it in the movie? Nagada Sang by Shreya, Poore Chand by Shail Hada, Lahu by Shail Hada are also good. Priyanka brings about refreshment with Ram Chahe Leela. Lyrics are by Siddharth-Garima and they are quite good.

All in all, if these are the kind of movies that today’s audience likes, I am certainly living in the wrong era. Sorry but I just didn’t like this flick. I couldn’t digest many of the facts shown in the movie. The tag line that is used meant that the movie was a big tragedy on the whole and it brought about a lot of pain on my mind to digest it. I was literally waiting for it to just end. But for some fine acting, music and some good scenes, I would rate it 2/5.
