The film is a perfect comedy, with the blend of artistic charisma. One of the Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s golden films, that Bollywood have ever experienced. The story starts with the interview, where a modern minded, sport-loving Ram Prasad Sharma, fools Bhavani Shankar, with a stereotype acting of an old-fashioned and a sport-disliking person. The pyjama-kurta with the dialogue “Pitaji kahete the, jiska much nahi, uska kuch nahi” impressed the boss, Utpal Dutta, and he recruited Amol. Acting of Amol Palekar and Utpal Dutta was a perfect, unique ‘ten on ten’ performance.
Twist in the tale.Ramprasad was present in the Hockey match, where Bhavani had a glance at him. Next day, ‘Lucky’ was born, with no moustache. Laxman Prasad, the twin brother of Ram Prasad, was called to visit Utpal’s house. ‘Love at first sight’ situation, the Kishore’s voice “Aane wala Pal, Jaane wala hai” with the brand music of R.D.Burman, impressed Bindiya Goswami to fall in love with ‘Lucky’.
After that, the film continues to explore different comedy characters from Kamala Devi, Deven Verma, mamaji, Kesto Mukherjee to Om Prakash. The acting of Bindiya and Ram’s sister Ratna was not up to the mark. Otherwise, the overall contribution was superb.
Dialogues and expressions were excellent. “Khao khao beta, nahi to police ki maar kaise sahoge” and taking off the artificial moustache, was the best scene of the movie. Action and cinematography was more or less satisfactory. The scene of Utpal Dutta following Ram Prasad and Urmila with the car was good. The theme song “Golmaal hai bhai, sab golmaal hai” used during some scenes, was an icing to the cake. One instance was, when Mrs.Srivastava entered the house from the kitchen window. Kesto Mukherjee, as usual, with a small role, did a splendid work.
Overall, it is a film, which consists of real-life comedy characters, with the theme that, one has to change his/her strategy to the market demand i.e. boss or customer. It also tells that physical appearance does not have any impact on the individual’s performance or career goals. As Deven Verma rightly explained in the end-“Hitler had a small moustache, but Nehru was not having it.” The film can be rated 9 out of 10. It’s one of the best & ‘must-see’ type Bollywood comedy films.
