Tennis has been my favourite sport and Boris Becker has been my favourite sports celebrity. (Guys, I will just let you onto one personal flop in my life dont laugh... When I was 8 years old I saw Boris Becker win Wimbledon for the first time.. it used to come on our great DoorDarshan and as usual used to be interrupted by some sick Samachar and News... When I saw Boris Beckers awesome display I decided I am going to enroll for tennis coaching..I went to my Mom and pestered her to enroll for it in my school summer vacation.. She never used to watch tennis or any other sport..guess what happened.. she went and enrolled my name in the Table Tennis coaching class.. And there burst my tennis dream and Indias prospective Wimbledon champion went down the drain....:-) I remember I saw Goran for the first time in that 1992 final against Andre Agassi...I first thought this guy cant do anything but serve... His game card used to be like ...5 aces, 3 double faults, 2 unforced errors..He used to serve five aces from 0-40 down and win a game :) And at numerous occassions he used to serve a second serve ace... He lost thrice in the finals and once in the semi-final to Pete Sampras.. I knew if there is anyone who can match Pistol Pete in his backyard it is Goran...and numerous times I saw Goran not just playing against Pete or any other opponent..He was playing against himself...He used to fret away advantages.. shout at himself...mumble something crude to the chair umpire.. I think there was some incident in his life which made him so hungry for Wimbledon...maybe his father (His father is an heart patient and has been advised by his doctors not to watch his sons matches..it gets too emotional ..but to this day he comes and watches each and every match that Goran plays) I remember that day in 2001 when I was at TCS Delhi and Goran-Pat Rafter were due to slug it out in the evening. I had decided to take a half-day (because it was a Monday mens final) but later thought against it since Star Sports was showing a delayed telecast..I think It was better in a way... do not know how I would have watched a live telecast..especially that nerve-wracking fifth set..I saw that night that match at my companys guest house and what a match it turned out to be...He made double faults, he served aces, he made unforced errors, he shouted, he cried but he won!!...He was literally in tears and hugged his father whose heart probably beat faster that any other time...Who is that stupid idiot whose says men dont cry... There is I believe some unique aura about Wimbledon. There is something so much pristine and traditional about this championship.and everybody who has won it has been a great sports personality.I think it is destiny at its best.take anyone for example...Boom Boom Becker, stefan Edberg, Pistol Pete, Goran and the artisan Roger Federer And yesterday I saw him lose to Hewitt..I felt very low..I was rooting for him for every point...Thinking one more time Goran...But see how he bid farewell to a rousing standing ovation.. Most of the time he throws his shirt into the crowd to those crazy female fans.. post-match he wore his croatia colours and thanked everybody..his father was equally happy... I never feel so excited when I watch any other Grand Slam match as I do when I see Wimbledon. The green grass, the Royal Box, the whites that the players have to wear..(I think it is that combination of green and white which makes Wimbledon look so pure...At all other Grand Slams players wear all kinds of multicolored stuff as per their sponsors wish.... I think wimbledon is one event which should have its due place in history. It is just not about sports, it is about people like Goran Ivanisevic who defy all odds and win it.. Hats off to you Goran...You made us laugh and cry at the same time.... Wish You all the best..
