Review : GMC Bombay is a centre of excellence shackled by a corrupt and inefficient bureaucracy and administration. Political interference from the state govt. and the lack of a forward-looking leadership and autonomy has hampered the growth of the institution and unfortunately led to an atrophy of vital areas. It’s strength is it’s dynamic and ambitious student body.
Real world success favours GMCites in ways that few colleges can boast about. The reason for this is probably the immense clinical exposure in its endless wards and cornucopia of patients. A wonderful campus life and an emphasis towards all-round development, not just cramming notes is a notable feature. GMC encourages individuality and mavericks abound!! The huge post-graduate programs mean that most undergrads receive the bulk of their clinical teaching from residents who, by and large are excellent teachers, mentors and friends.
GMC provides ample opportunity for learning by doing and a wealth of experience for those willing to spend the time. GMC does little to publicize it’s virtues. This is certainly not the case. Several graduates enter highly competitive postgradute programs not just in Bombay but in the rest of India and not least in the United Sates and the UK and go on to
establish burgeoning careers in practice and academia at home and abroad. GMC has not made
efforts to reach out to it’s alumni in a concerted way and perhaps future administrations will repair this lacuna.
