Few months back when I first saw the promos of ‘Gravity’ during the watching of ‘Elysium’, I was overwhelmed by the look of it, and I knew I am gonna like this movie, beyond any doubt. But, what I had not thought of is the extent to which I am gonna like it.
Gravity is a 2013 Sci-Fi, Space Drama, film directed by Alfonso Cuarón; starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. It’s about how the two astronauts Matt Kowalski(Clooney) and Dr. Ryan Stone(Bullock) survives in the space after their Space Shuttle ‘Explorer’ gets destroyed through crashing with the space debris of another shuttle. They lose contact with their control room and because of the chain reaction, debris of one space shuttle destroying all others in its path while orbiting the earth in cycles, they don’t have many options. There are two more space vehicles around their position, ISS belonging to Russia and another one to China, and they must reach them, if they are to survive and land safely on Earth. Will Matt and Ryan, already short on oxygen, be able to reach these shuttles before the debris are back after orbiting the Earth and destroy them as well? Watch ‘Gravity’ to know that.
‘Gravity’ is one of the most spectacular movies and is the best Space based Sci-Fi movie I have ever seen. The visuals are amazing and Earth has never looked so beautiful ever on screen. I was so lost in the beauty of the Earth and space and stars from that 600 KM distance above the space of Earth, that I hardly have time to notice the acting skills of the actors. And Believe me, its not just for some specific scene, full length of the movie is a visual treat, even the scenes shot within the space stations.
Though the plot is simple and most of the attention is given to depict the space and space crafts, some of the scenes still manage to thrill - providing give a chill or two. Many a times I heard the sighs of relief, coming from the viewers around me, each time Matt and Ryan succeed in their attempts during their survival act. I myself was clutching the arms of my seat when Matt and Ryan try to get into ISS as well as during the climax scene involving journey back to Earth.
Sandra Bullock has performed really well; in whatever scenes she’s without her space suits, otherwise its hardy noticeable. George Clooney has given a good support and brings in humor in otherwise tense tale. But this movie is not to be seen for the performances, no doubt they did well, this movie is a must watch for its visual beauty, its cinematography, its special effects(even better in 3D), and the music that wholly and solely supports the visuals(Most of the time its silent, but scenes involving action are very well supported by music to give you that chilling feeling).
There aren’t much of dialogues, and you don’t much look forward to them as well; Silence is most enjoyable(As in one scene, Matt asks Ryan, “What do you like most about the space?” and she says “Silence.”). Add to that the facts that one gets to learn about the space science, ‘Gravity’ provides you with too much within a short span of 1 hours and 30 minutes.
I don’t know when it’s going to release in India, but friends make sure you watch it - and watch it in Hall - and watch it in 3D. Otherwise you will be missing something really really spectacular and amazing and picturesque to watch. It’s worth every penny you spend on it.
In the words of James Cameron “Its the best space photography ever done, It’s best space film ever done, and its the movie Ive been hungry to see for an awful long time”. My feelings won’t be much different in any way.
